Unable to login with admin account after disconnecting from AzureAD

Hi all,

I'm having this issue right now were I can't login with the admin account to a computer that was disjoined/disconnected from AzureAD. It was disconnected/disjoined from AzureAD on purpose, as it was no longer required.

I'm not familiar with AzureAD, but at least in the old-school I remember that when you removed a computer from the AD domain you were asked to setup a new password for your local admin account. The tech that did this says he did not get asked to setup a new password when he removed the machine from AzureAD.

So I'm inclined to think the following:

  • Removing the machine from AAD does not require a password change on local admin by design, and we never knew the password in the first place.
  • Removing the machine from AAD sets up a generic password that we don't know about.

Any ideas? How can I go about login into the computer?

Hello @M2 , removing the machine from AAD does not require or prompt for a password change. If you don't know the local admin password please take a look to Reset your Windows local account password for several options. The best option (but rarest) is to remember securtity questions or to have a password reset disk (which you will use to boot the PC) but the most common is to reset/restore the whole operative system.

Finally, you may find alternative solutions in the web but keep in mind they may not be supported by Microsoft and could expose you to security breachs or information leaks.

Hi everyone, to add to @Alfredo Revilla - Senior Freelance SWE, SWA, IAM 's answer, my experience was different. After disconnecting from Azure AD, my pc restarted and the box for inputting password/PIN disappeared. I could only see 'sign in' and when I click it, the pc will appear to load but then go back to the same start up screen as if nothing happened. I searched the internet for several days endlessly looking for an answer but couldn't find one. I honestly do not know the exact step that worked, it still feels like a miracle, but I did the following. 1. I installed the Microsoft Authenticator app on my phone and added my personal Microsoft account. 2. On the startup screen of my pc, I clicked the power option at the bottom right corner of the screen, pressed down the 'shift' key on the keyboard while I clicked 'restart', this will take you to the startup options screen, then I clicked the 'Troubleshoot', then 'Reset this PC', then 'Keep my files', and followed all the prompts that came after including selecting something like 'reinstall windows from local' until windows was reinstalled on the pc. It appeared that the problem was still unsolved. So I shut down the pc for that day and went soul searching. The following day after keeping myself busy with the Salah celebrations, in the evening I turned on the pc without connection to the internet, it showed me the same screen with the 'sign in' option but without the password/PIN box. I almost gave up, but I decided to just click the 'sign in' again out of curiosity. This time it loaded and asked me to connect to the internet to perform this task. I clicked the Wi-Fi sign at the bottom right corner of the screen and connected to the internet, then I tried to sign in again, it took me through the process of signing into my personal Microsoft account and even through a code that I had to select on my Microsoft authenticator app on my phone, I followed through the process until it gave me the option to create a new PIN, and Voila! I was welcomed to a new windows screen and after the usual wait while windows 'set up things for you' my pc was up and running again. I made it an obligation to share this solution here and be very detailed so as to help anyone who finds himself/herself in such situation, not to suffer like I did for several days. Let me know if this helps. Cheers. 🥂
