Suddenly Outlook for Mac and Outlook for iPhone won't sync to Gmail

Suddenly today, on my MacBook and iPhone, the Outlook apps will no longer sync to Gmail (they sync just fine to my Exchange email & calendar). The gmail account is live - I can get to it from Safari and it's working fine. But the Outlook app today said it needed to open my Gmail account to be able to access data, and it gave me this Code 500 INTERNAL SERVER ERROR message. And I waited hours for online support chat to work, but nobody was only at Microsoft apparently (?). Tried deleting the gmail account on the iPhone and on the Mac within the Outlook apps, but it won't let me add it back on either device-- the same silly server error.
