Use Azure Databricks Genie in Microsoft Foundry

Important

This feature is in Public Preview.

This page explains how to add an Azure Databricks Genie Model Context Protocol (MCP) server as a tool in Microsoft Foundry, allowing your AI agents to connect and use the insights of Genie spaces. The Genie MCP server on Azure Databricks invokes Genie as an MCP tool and works out of the box. To learn more, see Available managed servers and What is an AI/BI Genie space.

Prerequisites

Step 1: Add Azure Databricks Genie as a tool

To add your Genie MCP server as a tool:

  1. In Microsoft Foundry, click Tools on the sidebar.

  2. Search for and select Azure Databricks Genie.

  3. Click Connect in the upper-right.

  4. Enter your credentials:

    • Name: Name your tool.
    • Remote MCP Server endpoint: Autopopulated with your Azure Databricks MCP server endpoint.
    • genie_space_id: Your Genie space ID, which can be found in the URL for your Genie space: https://<databricks-instance>/genie/rooms/<space-id>.
    • workspace-hostname: Your workspace instance name. To find your instance name, see Get identifiers for workspace objects.
    • OAuth Identity Passthrough: Your OAuth provider, Managed or Custom. Databricks recommend selecting Managed, which uses Entra authentication.
  5. Click Connect.

Step 2: Connect the Azure Databricks Genie MCP server to an agent

After you've connected to your Genie MCP server, use it in a Microsoft Foundry agent:

  1. From your connected Genie MCP server, click Use in an agent in the upper-right.
  2. Enter a message for your agent.
  3. Click Open consent from the agent's response to complete the setup process.
  4. Sign in to Azure Databricks when prompted.
  5. Click Approve to allow the agent to call Azure Databricks Genie.

Limitations

  • Azure Databricks Genie in Microsoft Foundry supports up to five questions per minute due to Genie API rate limits.
