Socket.ExclusiveAddressUse Property
Definition
Important
Some information relates to prerelease product that may be substantially modified before it’s released. Microsoft makes no warranties, express or implied, with respect to the information provided here.
Gets or sets a value that indicates whether the Socket allows only one process to bind to a port.
public:
property bool ExclusiveAddressUse { bool get(); void set(bool value); };
public bool ExclusiveAddressUse { get; set; }
member this.ExclusiveAddressUse : bool with get, set
Public Property ExclusiveAddressUse As Boolean
Property Value
true
if the Socket allows only one socket to bind to a specific port; otherwise, false
. The default is true
for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP and newer versions.
Exceptions
An error occurred when attempting to access the socket.
The Socket has been closed.
Bind(EndPoint) has been called for this Socket.
Examples
The following code example demonstrates the use of the ExclusiveAddressUse property.
static void ConfigureTcpSocket(Socket^ tcpSocket)
{
// Don't allow another socket to bind to this port.
tcpSocket->ExclusiveAddressUse = true;
// The socket will linger for 10 seconds after
// Socket.Close is called.
tcpSocket->LingerState = gcnew LingerOption(true, 10);
// Disable the Nagle Algorithm for this tcp socket.
tcpSocket->NoDelay = true;
// Set the receive buffer size to 8k
tcpSocket->ReceiveBufferSize = 8192;
// Set the timeout for synchronous receive methods to
// 1 second (1000 milliseconds.)
tcpSocket->ReceiveTimeout = 1000;
// Set the send buffer size to 8k.
tcpSocket->SendBufferSize = 8192;
// Set the timeout for synchronous send methods
// to 1 second (1000 milliseconds.)
tcpSocket->SendTimeout = 1000;
// Set the Time To Live (TTL) to 42 router hops.
tcpSocket->Ttl = 42;
Console::WriteLine("Tcp Socket configured:");
Console::WriteLine(" ExclusiveAddressUse {0}",
tcpSocket->ExclusiveAddressUse);
Console::WriteLine(" LingerState {0}, {1}",
tcpSocket->LingerState->Enabled,
tcpSocket->LingerState->LingerTime);

tcpSocket->SendTimeout);
Console::WriteLine(" Ttl {0}",

Console::WriteLine(" IsBound {0}",
tcpSocket->IsBound);
Console::WriteLine("");
}

Remarks
If ExclusiveAddressUse is false
, multiple sockets can use the Bind method to bind to a specific port; however only one of the sockets can perform operations on the network traffic sent to the port. If more than one socket attempts to use the Bind(EndPoint) method to bind to a particular port, then the one with the more specific IP address will handle the network traffic sent to that port.
If ExclusiveAddressUse is true
, the first use of the Bind method to attempt to bind to a particular port, regardless of Internet Protocol (IP) address, will succeed; all subsequent uses of the Bind method to attempt to bind to that port will fail until the original bound socket is destroyed.
This property must be set before Bind is called; otherwise an InvalidOperationException will be thrown.
