Remarks

A MarkupExtension derived custom class should apply this .NET Framework attribute to indicate a possible type-safe return type that is returned by its ProvideValue implementation. In other words, if a markup extension always returns a more specific type than type of Object, and casting to that type is a primary scenario, the markup extension class should attribute with MarkupExtensionReturnTypeAttribute and report that type.

In previous versions of the .NET Framework, this class existed in the WPF-specific assembly WindowsBase. In .NET Framework 4, MarkupExtensionReturnTypeAttribute is in the System.Xaml assembly. For more information, see Types Migrated from WPF to System.Xaml.

For more information on patterns for implementing a custom XAML markup extension, see MarkupExtension and Type Converters and Markup Extensions for XAML.
