Purchase a virtual machine product in the Azure portal

This article explains the different options and requirements for searching, trying, and buying a virtual machine (VM) product from the Marketplace experience of the Microsoft Azure portal.

The cost of Marketplace images, including Windows Server, Windows Client, and certain Linux distributions, is included in the VM plan. Some third-party VMs, known as core VMs, are managed as first-party distributions. While many endorsed Linux distributions are core VMs, not all endorsed distributions fall into this category, and not all core VMs are endorsed. To determine if a VM image is a core VM, check its Marketplace product page—if no price is displayed, it is managed as a first-party VM image. You can view VM pricing in the Azure Pricing Calculator. To learn how to get Azure Marketplace image information using the Azure CLI, see Find Azure Marketplace image information using the Azure CLI.

Tip

To learn how to purchase a VM image that is sold privately to your organization, see Private plans in Azure Marketplace.

  • An Azure user account with access to an appropriate Azure subscription. This subscription is used for billing and for organization of your purchased virtual machines. If you don't have an Azure subscription, create an Azure free account before you begin. To learn more about Azure subscriptions, see Create an additional Azure subscription.
