The Language tab in the Shared Settings panel controls the languages your agent can respond in, across every agent in the orchestration.
About language support
For the current list of supported languages, see Language support in Copilot Studio.
The model your agent uses affects how language switching behaves:
- GPT Realtime can detect and switch to a different language mid-conversation automatically, without the caller or user explicitly asking to switch.
- GPT-5 Chat (Cascade) requires an explicit request from the user before it switches languages.
Because of this difference, choosing the right Primary language matters more for agents that use GPT Chat than for agents that use GPT Realtime.
Topics (deterministic, node-based conversation flows) especially benefit from uploaded translations, since their responses don't rely on the underlying model to generate wording in the target language.
Configure languages
- Open your agent in Copilot Studio, and select the Build tab.
- Open Shared Settings, and select the Language tab.
- Review the Primary language, the default language for your agent's responses (for example, English (United States) (en-US)). Select Edit to change it.
- Under Secondary languages, additional languages your agent can respond in, select Add languages.
- Search or browse the list, select the check box next to each language you want to add, and select Add.
Manage localization
You can export your agent's content for translation, and then import the translated content back into your agent.
- Open your agent in Copilot Studio, and select the Build tab.
- Open Shared Settings, and select the Language tab.
- Under Manage localization, select Download to export your agent's content as a JSON or ResX file.
- Send the downloaded file to a translator, or translate it yourself, for each secondary language you added.
- After you have the translated file, return to the Language tab and select Upload to import the translated content back into your agent.
Make Adaptive Card dynamic content available for localization
Dynamic content in an Adaptive Card, such as content set with an expression, isn't included in the downloaded localization file by default. To make this dynamic content available for translation, replace the dynamic value with a text variable, and set it using a Set a variable value node:
- In the topic that displays the Adaptive Card, add a Set a variable value node before the Adaptive Card node.
- Set the variable to the dynamic value you want to localize.
- In the Adaptive Card's code editor, replace the dynamic expression with a reference to the text variable.
Text variables referenced this way are included in the downloaded localization file, so translators can localize them along with the rest of your agent's content.
Switch an agent's language mid-conversation
You can let users switch the conversation's language using the User.Language system variable. Set this variable to the language code you want the agent to respond in (for example, en-US or fr-FR), and the agent's subsequent responses use that language.
