Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standard for exposing tools to an agent. When you add an MCP server to your agent, every tool the server exposes becomes available for the agent to invoke during a conversation.
Use this how-to when you want to add an MCP server to an agent powered by the Customer Conversation harness. For an overview of tool types, see Available tools for agents (Customer Conversation).
Adding an MCP server to an agent powered by the Customer Conversation harness is similar to adding one to an agent powered by the standard harness. To learn more, see Connect your agent to an existing Model Context Protocol (MCP) server.
Add a server from the gallery
Open your agent in Copilot Studio, and select the Build tab.
Select the primary agent's card, or a sub-agent's card, to open its configuration panel.
In the Tools section, select Add tool.
In the Add a tool dialog, select the Model Context Protocol tab, and then select a server.
Review the server's description. If the server includes a Connector documentation link, use it to learn about capabilities and any setup specific to that server.
If a connection isn't already set up, select Create new connection, and provide the values that server requires. These values vary by server — for example, some servers only need a display name, while others require an endpoint URL and API key, or a hostname and workspace ID.
Select Create, and then select Add and configure to add the server's tools to your agent.
Because each server can require different connection values and change independently of Copilot Studio, this article doesn't enumerate the fields for every server. Rely on the in-product description and connector documentation link for the server you're adding.
Test the server
After you add the server, test it before you publish the agent.
Select the Preview tab.
Ask the agent a question that requires one of the server's tools.
Review the agent's response to confirm the tool was invoked as expected.
If the agent doesn't invoke the tool when you expect it to, refine the tool name, the tool description, or the agent's instructions.
Manage the server after adding it
To remove an MCP server or turn one off temporarily, see Manage and delete tools (Customer Conversation).
