Camera controls in Teams Rooms

Microsoft Teams Rooms gives people manual control over the room camera in addition to automatic framing features that run on the camera or in the cloud. This article describes the manual controls, how camera capabilities affect their availability and behavior, how to manage them, and what to do when controls aren't available or don't work as expected.

Teams Rooms provides two manual camera control surfaces:

  • Local pan, tilt, and zoom (PTZ) controls let people in the room adjust a compatible camera from the room console.
  • Camera switching lets people in the room change which connected camera is sending video.

On Teams Rooms on Windows, these controls work alongside the console's Enhanced framing setting, which turns automatic framing on and off. When Enhanced framing is on, the camera or the cloud reframes the room automatically using an available framing mode, such as IntelliFrame, Active speaker, or Group framing.

To use manual PTZ controls on Windows, turn Enhanced framing off. Camera eligibility and other room settings also affect whether controls are available. See Which cameras support local PTZ controls.

For information about framing modes, see Cloud IntelliFrame and Multi-Stream IntelliFrame.

Local PTZ is included in the Teams Rooms on Windows 5.7.112.0 release. For release information, see Teams Rooms release notes. Feature availability and camera compatibility are separate requirements.

Available controls and their behavior can vary by device platform, camera model, firmware, and Teams Rooms app version.

Prerequisites

  • A Teams Rooms device running a supported version of the Teams Rooms app, with the camera-control feature available on the device.
  • A camera connected to the Teams Rooms device and selected as the room camera.
  • For local PTZ on Windows, a camera that meets the requirements in Which cameras support local PTZ controls.

Use camera firmware recommended by the manufacturer for your configuration.

Local pan, tilt, and zoom controls

The local PTZ eligibility requirements, console instructions, and XML configuration in the following sections apply to Teams Rooms on Windows. On Teams Rooms on Android, available controls depend on the device and its firmware.

When available, local PTZ controls appear in Camera settings on the room console. People in the room can use a directional pad to pan and tilt the selected camera, and zoom controls to adjust its field of view.

Local PTZ controls are useful when the default camera position doesn't suit the way the space is being used — for example, when a camera is aimed at a table but the discussion has moved to a whiteboard.

Which cameras support local PTZ controls

Local PTZ is designed to let people use the pan, tilt, and zoom operations supported by the selected camera when the feature is available and the camera-eligibility and room-configuration requirements below are met.

Manual camera movement and Reset have different capability requirements. A camera can support manual pan, tilt, and zoom without supporting a reset of all three settings.

A camera must meet at least one of the following eligibility conditions:

  • The camera is listed under Cameras enabled by default for Cloud IntelliFrame. See Cameras enabled by default.
  • The camera reports its framing state to Teams Rooms. Framing-state reporting lets Teams Rooms determine whether the camera's own automatic framing is off before offering manual controls.

These eligibility conditions help prevent manual controls from conflicting with automatic camera framing.

In addition, all of the following room conditions must be met:

  • Enhanced framing is off.
  • Multiple camera view is off.
  • The <LocalPtzControlsEnabled> room setting is enabled.

Both cameras that move mechanically and cameras that adjust the image digitally can be eligible. The operations available through Teams Rooms depend on the camera's capabilities and firmware.

A camera that meets neither eligibility condition isn't eligible for local PTZ controls in Teams Rooms, even if it can be moved through the manufacturer's own controls.

Note

Camera eligibility and control behavior are different. The Cloud IntelliFrame camera list identifies an eligibility path; it isn't a tested local PTZ compatibility list. Neither inclusion in that list nor Teams certification confirms that every PTZ operation works on every camera and firmware combination.

If the requirements are met but a supported operation doesn't work as expected, see When local PTZ controls don't work as expected. Unexpected behavior shouldn't automatically be treated as evidence that the camera is unsupported.

The following diagram summarizes the camera and room eligibility checks for local PTZ on Teams Rooms on Windows. Available operations and their behavior depend on the camera's capabilities and firmware.

Evaluate cameras for deployment

Not every camera model and firmware combination has been tested with local PTZ on Teams Rooms on Windows.

Before deploying broadly, confirm the camera's capabilities and manufacturer-recommended firmware, and evaluate the pan, tilt, zoom, and Reset operations needed for your rooms. Use the Teams Rooms app version and camera firmware planned for deployment.

If multiple cameras are connected, confirm that the controls operate the intended camera after changing the selected source.

Use local PTZ controls

  1. On the room console, select the chevron next to the camera icon to open Camera settings. Selecting the camera icon itself turns the room camera on or off instead of opening the dialog.
  2. If more than one camera is connected, confirm that the intended camera is selected under Source.
  3. If Enhanced framing is on, turn it off. If local PTZ controls don't appear, see When local PTZ controls aren't shown.
  4. Use the available controls to adjust the selected camera's pan, tilt, or zoom.
  5. To reset camera adjustments, select Reset. The settings that reset depend on the camera's capabilities.

Note

Resetting all three settings — pan, tilt, and zoom — requires absolute PTZ support. Absolute PTZ allows software to set specific pan, tilt, and zoom values. It isn't required for manual PTZ adjustments generally: a camera can support manual movement without supporting a full reset. Consult the camera manufacturer's documentation for model-specific capabilities and reset behavior.

Screenshot of the Camera settings dialog on a Teams Rooms on Windows console. Enhanced framing is off. The Pan, tilt, and zoom controls panel shows zoom buttons, a directional pad, and a Reset button.

To close Camera settings, select anywhere outside the dialog. The dialog also closes on its own after a short period of inactivity.

Camera adjustments persist for the remainder of the meeting. Don't assume that ending a meeting restores the camera's previous position. Use Reset, where supported, when you want to reset camera adjustments.

The options shown in Camera settings vary by camera model. Some cameras show more settings than others, and framing modes appear only when the camera or the service supports them.

Manage local PTZ controls

The <LocalPtzControlsEnabled> room setting is enabled by default on Teams Rooms on Windows. Administrators can disable local PTZ for a room by using an XML configuration file.

This setting controls whether local PTZ is permitted in the room. It doesn't override feature availability, camera eligibility, or other room-configuration requirements.

  1. Create an XML configuration file by following the steps in Manage settings with an XML file.

  2. Add the following element to the SkypeSettings.xml file.

    <LocalPtzControlsEnabled>false</LocalPtzControlsEnabled>

  3. Restart the console for the configuration change to take effect.

When local PTZ controls aren't shown

The following checks apply to Teams Rooms on Windows. More than one condition can affect whether controls appear.

What you see Possible cause What to check
No PTZ controls in Camera settings Enhanced framing is on Turn Enhanced framing off, then check the remaining camera and room requirements.
No PTZ controls for any camera in the room Local PTZ is disabled, the feature isn't available on the device, or the cameras don't meet the eligibility conditions Check <LocalPtzControlsEnabled>, review Teams Rooms release notes, and confirm camera eligibility.
PTZ controls appear for one camera but not another Camera eligibility, capabilities, firmware, or camera selection differ Confirm the selected camera and review Which cameras support local PTZ controls. If the requirements are met but controls remain unavailable, contact Microsoft Support.
No PTZ controls while multiple camera view is on Local PTZ isn't available in multiple camera view Turn off multiple camera view. See Multiple camera view.
PTZ controls disappear after a room-setting change The change may have affected local PTZ availability or the camera configuration Review the changed settings. Confirm that <LocalPtzControlsEnabled> is enabled, the intended camera is selected, and Enhanced framing and multiple camera view are off.

When local PTZ controls don't work as expected

The following guidance applies to Teams Rooms on Windows.

What you see What to do
A PTZ control appears, but the camera doesn't respond as expected Confirm the camera's capabilities with the manufacturer and check the recommended firmware. If the camera supports the operation but the issue persists, contact Microsoft Support.
Reset changes zoom but doesn't reset pan or tilt Confirm whether the camera supports absolute PTZ. A camera that supports manual adjustments might not support a full reset.
Reset returns the camera to an inconsistent position Review the manufacturer's reset behavior and firmware guidance. If the camera supports the operation but the behavior remains inconsistent, contact Microsoft Support.

When reporting an issue, include the camera model, installed firmware, Teams Rooms app version, affected control, reproduction steps, and relevant diagnostic logs. Distinguish between controls that don't appear and controls that appear but don't work as expected.

Switch between in-room cameras

On Teams Rooms on Windows, when more than one camera is connected, people in the room can change which camera sends video by selecting a different camera under Source in Camera settings. Camera selection persists for the remainder of the meeting.

On Teams Rooms on Android, camera-selection options depend on the device and its firmware.

To send video from multiple cameras at the same time rather than switching between them, see Multiple camera view.

Expected behavior and known limitations

The following local PTZ behavior applies to Teams Rooms on Windows:

  • Manual controls and automatic framing are mutually exclusive. Local PTZ controls are hidden while Enhanced framing is on, so manual adjustments don't conflict with automatic framing.
  • Multiple camera view takes precedence. Local PTZ controls aren't offered while multiple camera view is active.
  • Reset differs from manual adjustment. A camera can support manual movement without supporting a reset of pan, tilt, and zoom together. See Use local PTZ controls.
