SharePoint in Microsoft 365 helps organizations share and manage content, knowledge, and applications to empower teamwork, quickly find information and seamlessly collaborate across the organization. For a quick overview, see What is SharePoint?
Available plans
Microsoft 365 is available in a variety of plans to best meet the needs of your organization. For detailed plan information on subscriptions that enable users for SharePoint, see the Microsoft 365 business plan comparison and Microsoft 365 Enterprise plan comparison. To access SharePoint, users in your organization need to be assigned a license that includes SharePoint. A Frontline plan is not sold as a standalone offer, only as part of Microsoft 365 F1 or Microsoft 365 F3.
Features available to Small Business, Enterprise, Education, GCC, GCC-High, and DOD Plans

Unless otherwise noted, the following table lists the major features available across all plans (Small Business, Enterprise, Education, GCC, GCC-High, and DOD Plans) that include SharePoint, and all SharePoint standalone plans. This table may change without notice (certain caveats apply, see footnotes for further information).

Starting early April 2025–May 2025, we will be retiring the 'Shared with us' feature on SharePoint Teams sites. Continue to use OneDrive's 'Shared with me' and 'Microsoft Teams' as alternatives.

Starting July 2025, 'SharePoint alerts' will be retired. New alert creation will be disabled for new tenants, followed by all tenants in September 2025. In October 2025, alerts will begin expiring 30 days after first use, with users able to re-enable them manually. By July 2026, SharePoint Alerts will be fully removed and no longer functional. Recommended transition to Power Automate for a more modern, integrated notification experience across Microsoft 365. Review your current usage and plan accordingly.

SharePoint Embedded will introduce a new default filtering feature by sensitivity labels for containers, rolling out worldwide from late October to November 2025. Admins can better organize containers without impacting user workflows. Organizations should review label taxonomies and update documentation accordingly. 10 Starting June 30, 2025, until July 31, 2025, we'll be retiring an internal component of Cloud Hybrid Search in SharePoint in Microsoft 365. To ensure continued support for Cloud Hybrid Search, we recommend upgrading your SharePoint Server 2016/2019/Subscription Edition to SharePoint Server Subscription Edition Version 25H1. This version, available in March 2025, will exclusively support Cloud Hybrid Search following the retirement.
11 On April 2, 2025, domain-isolated web parts will be turned off for any newly created tenants. On April 2, 2026, Microsoft will remove the ability to use domain-isolated web parts for existing tenants. If your organization still uses domain-isolated web parts, these will render an error message and stop functioning after the change has rolled out. We recommend updating the impacted web parts to regular web parts and redeploying them to ensure continued functionality.
12 Microsoft SharePoint Online users can change a file's sensitivity label directly from the Details pane starting early 2024. This feature was disabled for your tenant during the preview phase but will be enabled from February 1, 2025 to March 1, 2025.
13 On June 13, 2025, Microsoft announced the deprecation of SharePoint Framework (SPFx) Field Customizers for SharePoint Lists and Document Libraries. While an initial retirement date was shared, it has since been revised, and no timeline is currently set.
SharePoint Advanced Management
SharePoint Advanced Management (SAM) provides additional governance and lifecycle capabilities that build on SharePoint and OneDrive. These capabilities help organizations manage content sprawl, reduce oversharing, and maintain control over site access and lifecycle, especially when preparing for or using Microsoft 365 Copilot.
SharePoint Advanced Management is available as part of Microsoft 365 Copilot or as an add-on. For more information about requirements and setup, see the SharePoint Advanced Management prerequisites.
Key capabilities
SharePoint Advanced Management includes capabilities that help administrators monitor and manage SharePoint and OneDrive environments, such as:
- Managing site lifecycle through policies for ownership, inactivity, and site attestation
- Identifying and reducing oversharing through insights, reporting, and access controls
- Monitoring site activity and administrative changes through reporting and audit views
- Organizing and governing sites using classification, policy-based management, and tools for comparing site policies

SharePoint Resources
OneDrive: OneDrive in Microsoft 365 is online storage for individual users within an organization. It's the place where people can store, sync, and share their work files across multiple devices with ease and security. See the OneDrive service description, to learn how much OneDrive storage comes with each plan. OneDrive is included in SharePoint and can also be purchased as a standalone plan.
Rights of guests: If you purchase a plan and create a site that uses enterprise features, guests you invite are granted rights to use and/or view the enterprise features within the site. While you can invite guests to perform a full range of actions on a site, they won't have the same capabilities as a licensed user within your organization. For example, if your plan includes desktop versions of Office applications, guests can't install them on their own computers unless you assign them a license.
External collaboration: SharePoint uses Microsoft Entra B2B for guest authentication. When content is shared with external users, a B2B guest account is automatically created in the sharing tenant's directory through the Microsoft Entra B2B Invitation Manager. Guest authentication experience depends on the tenant's Entra External ID configuration, supporting sign-in with work or school accounts, Microsoft accounts, or Entra B2B email one-time passcode (OTP).
