Options for Delivering Provisioning XML Files to Windows Mobile Devices

There are a number of options for delivering provisioning files to Windows Mobile-based Smartphone and Pocket PC devices. They divide, roughly, into three categories.

  1. Over the air (OTA) delivery.
  2. Delivery methods requiring physical access to the device, by the operator or user.
  3. Placing the provisioning files in device ROM either before or after deployment.

The following tables list the available options by category:

OTA Pushed to device

Delivery Method Description
WAP Push Windows Mobile based Smartphone and Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC, Phone Edition can be provisioned by means of over-the-air (OTA) Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) push. For more information see, Provisioning OTA Through a WAP Push.
SI and SL Service Indication (SI) and Service Loading (SL) can be used to send and load sending provisioning XML files. For more information, see SI and SL XML Files (SP Only).

OTA Pulled by device

Delivery Method Description
Over HTTP or HTTPS (Pocket Internet Explorer) The user uses Pocket Internet Explorer to browse a web site from which they can download the provisioning XML files. See Application Delivery for more information.
SMS The user receives an SMS message containing a link to the web site from which they can download the provisioning files. See Application Delivery for more information.
email The user receives an email message containing a link to the web site from which they can download the provisioning files. See Application Delivery for more information.

Physical access to the device

Delivery Method Description
From the desktop The Remote Application Programming Interface (RAPI) in ActiveSync can be used to push the provisioning XML file. See Provisioning From a Desktop Computer Using Remote API and ActiveSync.
Memory Card The Autorun feature can be used to provision the Windows Mobile-based device using a Secure Digital Multimedia Card (SD/MMC). See Application Delivery for more information.

Note   Using files on an MMC is not a valid method for provisioning Pocket PC.

User Interface The user can manually reconfigure the device by using the User Interface (UI) to change settings. See Provisioning Through the User Interface for more information.

Placed in ROM

Delivery Method Description
ROM Configuration File The device can be pre-configured by putting a text configuration XML file in the Operator ROM Region. This is usually done by the OEM or ODM for the Mobile Operator and is used to Bootstrap Provision the device. For more information, see Provisioning Using a ROM Configuration XML File (SP Only).
ROM Update Provisioning XML files can be loaded into the device Operator ROM region and updated using ROM Update.
