Server Quick Start

To begin development of an Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) application, you must first set up your development and AD RMS environment and run the Protected Document Library Sample.

  1. Read the Server Requirements section to ensure that your system has the hardware and software that are required to install AD RMS. Developer knowledge is also covered in this section.

  2. Ensure that you either have access to an existing AD RMS service, or install a new AD RMS service from https://www.microsoft.com/downloads. The documentation that is included with AD RMS explains how to set up an AD RMS service.

If you are installing a new AD RMS account certification service and an existing AD RMS account certification service is already registered in Active Directory, you will need to add the following empty string value to the registry. Add this value after installation but before provisioning. After adding this registry value, stop and restart IIS and close the browser window.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
         Software
              Microsoft
                   DRMS
                        1.0
                             GICURL

  3. Install the sample application that is included with this SDK either on your AD RMS server or on a computer that has access to your AD RMS service. Details about installing the sample can be found in Installing the Protected Document Library Sample. These instructions also describe how to install the AD RMS client and the Rights Management Add-on for Internet Explorer on any computer that will be used to view the protected content. You must ensure that your AD RMS service is enrolled in the Production key hierarchy.

If you are using your own application to display AD RMS-protected content, your AD RMS service must be in the same key hierarchy as your displaying application. A key hierarchy is a chain that leads back to a common root certificate. All licenses and certificates are inside a key hierarchy. There are two key hierarchies: the Pre-production hierarchy, used for AD RMS client application development, and the Production hierarchy, used for released products, including the AD RMS application. You may need to switch your AD RMS service and application back and forth between these two hierarchies.

  4. Run the sample application to see how content is protected and viewed. For information about how to run the sample application, see Running the Protected Document Library Sample.
