Building the Data Tier

After you configure the network, you deploy the required software on the database servers. Start by installing Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 on each server, and then install and configure the appropriate server software for each server.

A Commerce Server 2009 data tier contains the following components.

Servers and hardware

Quantity

Domain controller

Clustered database servers

2

Non-clustered database servers

Network cables

4 or more

Follow these steps when you are building a data tier:

  1. Set up your network switch, load balancer, and firewalls. Wire your network, install the Windows operating system on the Web servers, and define your network settings. For more information, see Configuring the Commerce Server Network.

  2. Install Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 on each server. For more information, see What Are the Software Deployment Requirements?

  3. Configure the domain controller if you have not already done this. For more information, see Configuring a Domain Controller.

  4. Configure each instance of SQL Server. A data tier has five or fewer database servers that you configure:

    • A clustered pair of production database servers.

    • Data Warehouse and analysis non-clustered database server (optional).

    • BizTalk non-clustered database server (optional).

    • Non-clustered management database server (optional).

For more information, see Configuring the Database Servers.

  5. Configure the business management server:

    1. Perform steps 1 through 6 in Configuring the Business Management Server.

    2. Grant the Commerce Server 2009 service identities access to the databases. See Granting Access to the Commerce Server Databases.

    3. Perform the remaining steps in Configuring the Business Management Server.

  6. (Optional) Set up the BizTalk server. For more information, see Configuring the BizTalk Server.

  7. (Optional) Set up the Data Warehouse and analysis server. For more information, see Configuring the Data Warehouse and Analysis Server.

  8. (Optional) Set up the management server for monitoring the production environment. For more information, see Configuring the Operations Management Server.
