Translating a Catalog with Business Desk

When you have only a few products to translate, use the Catalog Editor module in Commerce Server Business Desk to manually add the product data in a different language. This procedure is described in this topic.

When you have many products to translate, use the Catalog Editor module to export the catalog to an XML file, which you can then translate in-house or send to a translation service. For instructions, see Translating a Catalog by Exporting/Importing.

To use Business Desk to translate a catalog

  1. Verify that the product and category properties you want to translate are multilingual property definitions. Your site developer can convert properties to multilingual properties programmatically. For more information, see Creating a Multilingual Catalog.

  2. If needed, add the new language to your catalog. For instructions, see Adding a Language to a Catalog.

  3. In Catalogs, click Catalog Editor.

  4. In the Catalogs screen, select the catalog you want to work with, and then click Open on the toolbar.

  5. In the Catalog Content - <catalog> screen, in the Products section, click Find Now to display all the products, or use one of the search methods to list only the products you want to translate.

  6. Select the product you want to translate, and then click Edit.

  7. In the language box on the toolbar, select from the drop-down list the language you want to edit. You can select only the languages supported by the catalog.

  8. Type translated text in the multilingual boxes, which have a Multilingual next to them. The value you type will apply only to the currently selected language.

    • If you change text or values in boxes that are not multilingual, then the change will apply to the product across all languages.
    • If your keyboard does not support the characters of the language you are entering, you must use an Input Method Editor (IME) to type the text.
  9. To save the translated text and return to the Catalog Content screen, click Save and go back on the toolbar.

  10. Select another product to edit, or click Back on the toolbar.
