Deploy SharePoint Workspace 2010

Applies to: Groove Server 2010, SharePoint Workspace 2010

Topic Last Modified: 2016-10-03

This article describes how to deploy Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010 in a managed environment that uses Microsoft Groove Server 2010. SharePoint Workspace is a rich client to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010.As such, it enables information workers to synchronize online and offline content with document libraries and lists at a designated SharePoint site, and provides options for creating Groove peer workspaces and shared folder workspaces.

SharePoint Workspace 2010 is included with Microsoft Office 2010 ProPlus installation.

Customizing the installation enables you to decide how SharePoint Workspace 2010 will be deployed and used. For example, you can require intended SharePoint Workspace users to enter a managed account configuration code. This prevents them from creating unmanaged accounts. This article describes how to customize SharePoint Workspace 2010 installation for deployment in your organization.

Before you begin

Before you start these procedures, address the following prerequisites:

Customize SharePoint Workspace deployment via Office Customization Tool settings

The Office Customization Tool (OCT) for Office 2010 enables you to customize the deployment of SharePoint Workspace 2010 by applying various install options. This is especially helpful if you are not running Active Directory and cannot access Group Policy objects.

This section explains how the OCT can help you customize SharePoint Workspace deployment. You can access the OCT by downloading the installation directory from the Microsoft Office Professional 2010 media, and then typing setup /admin from a Windows command line.

As an alternative, if you are using Active Directory, you can customize SharePoint Workspace 2010 deployment via Group Policy. For information about how to use SharePoint Workspace Group Policy objects to customize deployment, see Configure and customize SharePoint Workspace 2010.

For more information about how to use the OCT, see Office Customization Tool in the Office system (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkID=162306&clcid=0x409).

The following procedure describes Office Customization Tool (OCT) options that you can use to optimize SharePoint Workspace deployment.

To customize SharePoint Workspace deployment via Office Customization Tool settings

  1. Specify OCT feature options as follows:

    1. Under Feature Options, click Modify User Settings.

    2. Select Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010 from the list of programs.

    3. To require an administrator-supplied SharePoint Workspace account configuration code, double-click SharePoint Workspace Account Configuration Code Required to open its Properties dialog box, click Enabled, and then click OK. For information about how to automate SharePoint Workspace account configuration, see Automate SharePoint Workspace account configuration/restoration.

    4. To specify the name of the Groove Server Manager to be used for management, double-click Name to open its Properties dialog box, type the name for server name. Then they click OK.

    5. To enable a requirement for a secured communications link between SharePoint Workspace-and Groove Server Manager, double-click Valid Link Security, Enabled. Then they click OK. When this requirement is enabled, the presented Groove Server Manager Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate must be valid to enable SharePoint Workspace-to-Manager communication.

    6. To prohibit use of Groove workspaces and Shared folder workspaces, double-click Prohibit Use of Groove workspaces, click Enabled. Then they click OK.

    7. To enable Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption for connections to SharePoint sites, double-click SharePoint Workspace Valid Link Security, click Enabled. Then they click OK.

    8. To specify IPv6 installation, if supported on client systems, double-click IPv6, click Enabled. Then they click OK.

    9. To specify IPv4 installation, if supported on client systems, double-click IPv4, click Enabled. Then they click OK

    10. To set the limit for the number of failed proxy connection attempts to Groove Server Relay by the SharePoint Workspace client, click Maximum Number of Proxy Connection Failures to Groove Relay Server. When the limit is reached, additional proxy connection attempts to Groove Server Relay are abandoned. The default value is 1. When you enable this policy setting, the SharePoint Workspace client will be limited to the set number of proxy-to-Relay connection failures. When you disable or do not configure this policy setting, repeated proxy connection tries can disrupt server operation.

    11. To prevent the SharePoint Workspace client from initiating communications to listed Groove Relay servers that are known to be permanently decommissioned, click DeCommissionedRelayList. The format is a comma separated list of fully qualified domain names of Groove Relay servers. Wildcards in the names are supported. The ‘?’ is used for single character substitution and ‘*’ is used for domain part substitution (Examples: relay1.contoso.com,*.contoso.com, relay?.contoso.com). When you enable this policy setting, the SharePoint Workspace client will not initiate communication with the Groove Server Relay DeCommissionedRelayList.

  2. Specify Additional Content as follows:

    1. Use the Add Files option to automatically add files such as SharePoint Workspace templates to user installations.

    2. Use the Remove Files option to automatically remove specific files during installation. Files to be removed may include workspace templates from previous installations.

    3. Use the Remove Files setting if you have special requirements that can only be enabled or disabled via the Windows registry. For example, you can use this setting to remove legacy SharePoint Workspace or Office Groove 2007 device management registry settings or you can set the registry value that disables running the New User video upon configuration of a new account.

Configure SharePoint Workspace user accounts

Activating SharePoint Workspace user accounts involves applying an account configuration code to each SharePoint Workspace client installation. The recommended approach to deploying SharePoint Workspace user account configuration codes is to automate the process and eliminate the need for end-user input, as described in Automate SharePoint Workspace account configuration/restoration. However, this method requires integration with Active Directory. If you do not have access to Active Directory or otherwise need to use a manual account configuration process, use the manual procedure, described in Manually delivering SharePoint Workspace account configuration codes.
