About the VMM Administrator Console

The VMM Administrator Console is used to perform all administrative tasks in Virtual Machine Manager. The console enables you to perform the following operations:

  • Work with hosts, virtual machines, library resources, and reports; monitor jobs; and perform administrative tasks for Virtual Machine Manager in five views in the VMM Administrator Console. For more information, see The Console Views.
  • Customize your views by configuring host groups, library groups, virtual machine tags, and custom properties for hosts and virtual machines. For more information, see How to Customize Your Views.
  • Connect to virtual machines from the VMM Administrator Console by using Virtual Machine Remote Console (VMRC).
  • In Virtual Machines view, view a thumbnail of your session with the selected virtual machine in the details pane. Double-click the thumbnail to move to the desktop of the virtual machine.
  • Use the drag-and-drop method to perform actions on hosts, host groups, and virtual machines:
    • In Hosts view, drag hosts or a host group to a different host group.
    • In Virtual Machines view, drag a virtual machine to a host or to a host group to migrate the virtual machine to a different host. When you drag a virtual machine to a host group, the virtual machine is migrated to the most suitable host in the host group by using automatic placement.
  • Double-click an object in the results pane to perform a default action on the object:
    • When you double-click most objects, the Properties dialog box opens.
    • When you double-click a virtual machine that is in a Failed state, the Repair virtual machine action is selected.
  • View detailed status and an audit trail for jobs in Jobs view. View the date and time for all jobs in local time on the VMM Administrator Console.
  • Display the Jobs window to monitor your current jobs while you work in any view. For more information, see How to Monitor Jobs.
  • Centrally manage files on multiple library servers in Library view.
  • View and open reports generated in Operations Manager 2007 in Reporting view. You can add your own custom reports created in Operations Manager to Reporting view. For more information, see Reporting.
  • Open sessions with more than one Virtual Machine Manager server at the same time. For more information, see How to Connect to a Different VMM Server.
  • Perform administrative tasks at the command line. All administrative tasks in the VMM Administrator Console are performed by cmdlets in the Windows PowerShell - Virtual Machine Manager command shell and can be performed at the command line or automated through scripts. For more information, see Using the Virtual Machine Manager Command Shell.
