Deployment Designer Terminology

In Distributed System Designers, you can use Deployment Designer to define and evaluate deployment for an application system against a logical representation of the target datacenter. Deployment Designer opens when you create a deployment diagram from the application diagram or a system diagram after choosing a logical datacenter diagram that represents the datacenter you want to use. The deployment diagram mirrors the logical datacenter diagram you choose and is scoped for the chosen system diagram. For more information, see System Designer Terminology and Logical Datacenter Designer Terminology.

From the System View window, you can drag applications from the system and bind them to logical servers on the deployment diagram to describe how those applications will deploy in the datacenter. You can validate the deployment diagram at any time and generate deployment reports to help you write deployment scripts.

For more information, see Overview of Deployment Designer.

The following table introduces terminology associated with Deployment Designer.

Term

Definition

Deployment diagram

The diagram used to define and evaluate deployment for applications in an application system. The deployment diagram (.dd) file contains information based on the System Definition Model (SDM).

For more information, see the following topics:

Logical datacenter

Represents and abstracts part of a physical datacenter using logical servers, endpoints, connections, and zones.

For more information, see Overview of Logical Datacenter Designer and Logical Datacenter Designer Terminology.

Logical server

Represents the run-time environment to which an application in an application system will be deployed.

For more information, see Overview of Logical Datacenter Designer and Logical Datacenter Designer Terminology.

Binding

The process of specifying where an application from an application system will be deployed in the logical datacenter.

For more information, see Binding Applications to Logical Servers.

Bound application

Refers to an application that has been bound to a specific logical server on a deployment diagram.

Bound system

Refers to the application system whose applications are bound to logical servers as described on a deployment diagram.

Deployment report

Refers to XML- and HTML-formatted reports that are associated with a deployment diagram. You can use these reports to create installation and deployment scripts.

For more information, see Overview of Deployment Reports.
