Windows XP Embedded Target Designer does not automatically remove an existing component, that Windows® XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007 supplies re-factoring for, from a configuration. This is because Windows XP Embedded Target Designer does not track whether a component was automatically added because it is a dependent or was intentionally added manually.
For instance, FP 2007 removes WMI Core's dependency on the Volume Shadow Copy Service component. So, after upgrading your configuration to use FP 2007, including the database and its updated components, you can obtain a footprint reduction by manually removing the Volume Shadow Copy Service component and all of its associated dependencies. For example:
+Volume Shadow Copy Service
++Indexing Service
+++Filter Mime Messages for the Indexing Service
++Removable Storage Service
After manually removing the above component and associated dependencies, you will need to run Check Dependencies again. This ensures the component(s) can be safely removed. If those component(s) are automatically re-inserted after the checking process finishes, then other features or components in the configuration still depend on them. This is normal.
