This topic provides user-interface (UI) guidelines for using Windows brand fonts in a Live Search application on a Windows Embedded NavReady powered device.

Device UI Guidelines

The following picture shows the options for fonts for a Live Search application on a Windows Embedded NavReady powered device:

Fonts Example

The Verdana font family in Regular, Regular Italic, or Bold is the preferred font to use in online applications. In the user interface, the Verdana font in the color Black is the first choice, and Tahoma in the color Black is the second choice.

The prompt text within the Search box in your UI should be displayed in Arial font in the color Black as your first choice, and Tahoma font in the color Black as your second choice.

Black color is used in the Live Search signature font and for short text. The RGB value (8 bit) is R00+G00+B00. The Hexadecimal value is #000000.

For example:

The following additional guidelines should be followed when you use fonts in your UI:

  • Do not use tight or loose kerning.
  • Do not use the Semibold font weight of Verdana.
  • Do not use colors other than the colors specified in these UI guidelines.
  • Do not use a mix of fonts and sizes; especially within the same headline, within the same block of copy content, or within the same subheading.
    For example:

Online and Print Guidelines

The following picture shows the options for fonts in online and print marketing collateral:

Live Search fonts for print & online communication

The Segoe font family in Light, Light Italic, or Bold is the preferred font to use in communications for print material or online communications. The Segoe font in the color Black is the first choice, and Verdana in Regular, Regular Italic, or Bold in the color Black is the second choice.

Note

Segoe font is not used with LS4D applications on a Windows Embedded NavReady powered device.

When you reference the Microsoft Live Search brand name in online or print marketing collateral, you should follow these guidelines:

  • The official name includes the trademark symbol (®) appended to Microsoft; for example:
    Microsoft® Live Search
  • The first time that Microsoft Live Search is mentioned in "body" text, it should also include the properly-placed trademark symbol (®).
  • Microsoft Live Search is being marketed primarily through online communications. Therefore, although trademark symbols are generally not used on Microsoft.com, trademark symbols in online content about Microsoft Live Search should appear at the first mention in each topic or article, although not necessarily on each Web page.
  • On second and successive mentions, you can remove the trademark symbol and the word "Microsoft" so that it reads "Live Search".

The following is a text example using all of these guidelines:
