Build Your First Standard 8 Image (Standard 8)

Learn how to build a basic Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) image using Image Builder Wizard (IBW).

In this procedure, you will learn about how to use Image Builder Wizard (IBW) by building a minimal Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) image.

Prerequisites

To run IBW, your target device should meet or exceed the Requirements for an Embedded Device.

Note

The Standard 8 setup process performs several verifications, which rely on the target device's date and time settings. For optimal performance, confirm that the target device is set to the correct date and time.

To build your first Windows Embedded 8 Standard image using Image Builder Wizard

  1. On your reference device, insert the Standard 8 product DVD that corresponds to the architecture of the reference device and restart your device to run IBW.

  2. On the Install Windows page, do the following:

    • Click Install now

  3. On the Microsoft Software License Terms page, do the following:

    1. Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms by selecting I accept the license terms.

      Note

      Because the Microsoft Software License Terms are not all visible at the same time on one page, use the scrollbar to show all the license information.

    2. Click Next.

  4. On the Image Creation Method page, there are two options. In this procedure, select the following option:

    • Create a custom image

  5. On the Language and Locale Settings page, do the following:

    1. Select Language to install on the target device.
    2. Select Time and currency format to use.
    3. Select Keyboard or input method.
    4. Click Next to continue.

  6. On the Target Analysis page, there are three options to map drivers to devices.

    In this procedure, select the following option:

    • Automatically detect devices

    This option uses the .pmq file that IBW automatically generates for the device on which it is running.

    Note

    IBW runs Target Analyzer Probe (TAP) to detect the installed devices. The resulting .pmq file is then mapped to the necessary driver packs to be installed on the system.

  7. The Drivers Confirmation page will display a Tree view list of all devices discovered by IBW. Select Next.

    Note

    To add device drivers to your image, select Add Drivers and locate the folder where additional drivers are located. If you add drivers to your image, they will be displayed under the node External Drivers.

    • Choose Next to continue.

  8. On the Feature Modules Selection page, you can select feature modules for target configuration.

    Modules are arranged by category and subcategory. You may select or clear check boxes by individual module or by category or subcategory.

    The Feature Modules can be viewed in a Tree view or a List view. You can click Switch view to change the view type. The List view enables alphabetical viewing of available modules and lets you locate a module quickly when the category is not known.

    The Resolve optional dependencies check box enables optional dependency resolution. For more information about module dependencies, see Modules Technical Reference.

    You will be alerted to any module dependency conflicts. A series of dialog boxes will display a list of modules that you can use to resolve dependency conflicts.

    To add feature modules for your first Standard 8 image:

    1. Select one of the Windows Shell feature modules from the list to add to your Standard 8 image.
    2. When you have finished selecting modules, click Resolve to resolve module dependencies.
      When all dependencies conflicts are resolved, the Next button is available.
    3. Choose Next to continue.

  9. On the Summary page, you can review the modules and drivers that will be installed.

    • Choose Next to continue.

  10. On the Volume Management and Selection page:

    Note

    If the volume you want to install your Standard 8 image on is not listed or you have to prepare it, you can use the Load Driver or Drive options (advanced) to perform the steps that are required to make the drive ready for the installation.

    1. Select the volume you want to install your Standard 8 image on.
    2. Choose Next to continue.

  11. The Installing Windows page displays detailed information about the progress of your image installation.

    Your device will restart several times during installation. When the installation has finished, the Installation Progress page closes.

    Your device restarts using the new Standard 8 image that you created.

Next Steps

After your device restarts, it displays a series of Windows Welcome screens that you can use to help set up your device. You can do the following:

  • Choose a user name and picture.
  • Type a device name and decide a desktop background.
  • Help protect Windows automatically.
  • Review your time and date settings.
  • Select your device's current location.

When Windows Welcome is finished, click Start on the final screen. You can now log on to your new Standard 8 image and try the features that you added in IBW.
