Install the Standard 8 Toolkit on a Development Computer (Standard 8)

7/8/2014

Learn how to install the Windows Embedded 8 Standard Toolkit (Standard 8 Toolkit) on your development computer.

You install Windows Embedded 8 Standard Toolkit (Standard 8 Toolkit) on a development computer so that you can use tools to deploy and service a Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) image, and also to develop and build new Standard 8 images. For information about deploying and servicing images, see Deploy Images and Maintain Images. For information about developing and customizing images, see Build Images and Customize Images.

Note

The Standard 8 Toolkit consists of 32-bit applications that you can install on both x86-based and x64-based computers.

  • On a 32-bit OS, the default toolkit location is:

    C:\Program Files\Windows Embedded 8 Standard\Toolset\
  • On a 64-bit OS, the default toolkit location is:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Embedded 8 Standard\Toolset\
  • On both 32-bit and 64-bit OS systems, the default catalog location is:

    %systemdrive%\Windows Embedded Catalog

The first time you run Image Configuration Editor (ICE), it prompts you to provide your ICE product key. If you do not provide a valid product key, ICE begins a 30-day toolkit trial period and prompts you for a valid product key each time you start ICE. At the end of the toolkit trial period, you must enter a valid product key to continue to use ICE.

Prerequisites

To install the Windows Embedded 8 Standard Toolkit on a development computer

  1. To run the Toolkit Setup.exe command, do one of the following:

    • If you have the Standard 8 Toolkit DVD in the DVD drive, at the command prompt, type the following:

      <DVD DRIVE:>\Windows Embedded Studio\Setup.exe

    • If you downloaded Setup.exe, run it from the location where you saved it.

  2. Follow the instructions in the installation wizard until you reach the Setup Type page.

  3. On the Setup Type page, do one of the following:

    • To install the tools and catalogs to the default location, select Complete.

    • To install the tools and catalog to a different location, select Custom.

      Warning

Paths to catalogs that are greater than 90 characters may result in failures if the value of Windows max_path is exceeded. These failures can be difficult to troubleshoot; so try to use short paths and mappings to avoid this problem.

  4. Follow the remaining instructions in the installation wizard for the Standard 8 Toolkit.

Next Steps

After you have installed the Standard 8 Toolkit on a development computer, the next step is to develop an image. For more information, see Build Images.
