Using the Template Gateway User Interface

The Gateway base configuration includes a template gateway user interface (UI). The template gateway UI, admin2.dll, is a subset of the Natadmin. The source files and HTML pages are in located in the %_WINCEROOT%\Public\Servers\Oak\Gateway directory.

The template gateway user interface is designed for use by end users of the gateway. The UI has the polished look that users expect. The included functionalities represent common user tasks, such as parental control, setting up the firewall, selecting mail services, and scheduling other network services. However, the template UI is not complete and the OEMs must further customize it to include branding and other hardware specific functionalities.

To launch the template gateway UI, use your Internet browser and go to http://<Gateway IP Address>/admin2. On first use, the application requires a password. In addition, the application requires authentication and you must use the default username ADMIN and the same password that you typed on first use.

If you have a proxy server on the public network, you may need to turn off the proxy server to launch the gateway UI. For more information about bypassing the proxy server, see Using the Network Administration Utility.

The following list shows the features included in the template gateway UI:

  • Current connection status for the Wide Area Network (WAN), Local Area Network (LAN), and gateway.
  • Configuration pages for WAN and LAN.
  • MAC Address cloning page.
  • DHCP server configuration page.
  • Applications page to use for configuring Internet games or other applications that require connections to multiple ports.
  • Virtual server page to access services on the local network.
  • Parental control page for setting filters or permissions for Web content.
  • Intrusion detection page that can be modified to support an OEM application.
  • Security by-pass page for setting up an exposed host to the Internet.
  • Firewall security page for enabling or disabling the firewall or for setting up the firewall rules.
  • Maintenance pages for changing passwords, setting time, upgrading firmware, resetting the device, backing up the settings, viewing network traffic statistics, viewing the logs, setting up the gateway.

OEMs can customize the application using the HTML template and cascading style sheet-based pages. The UI has been localized into 8 languages including English, Japanese, German, and Korean. The localized versions are located in the %_WINCEROOT%\Public\Servers\Oak\Gateway\Html\Intlfile directory.

The following list shows the customization tasks that must be accomplished prior to shipping the UI:

  • Add OEM branding to all HTML pages.
  • Include a product registration page in the Setup Wizard.
  • Provide a hardware reset button for the device that restores the factory settings.
  • Configure the gateway feature options to match the hardware capability. For example, you can add a firewall or wireless capability to the gateway.
  • Provide a user's guide that explains how to use the configuration utility.

The following list shows the optional customization tasks that OEMs can do prior to shipping the UI:

  • Provide context sensitive help.
  • Allow third-party providers to use the output messages from the firewall for an intrusion-detection application.
  • Add menu items and links to additional products and services included with the gateway device.
  • Modify the setup wizard for guided installation of key features.
