Configuring Ports to Allow Services Through Windows Firewall

Windows Firewall allows you to open ports to allow only traffic from addresses on your local subnet, or globally to allow traffic from any network location, local or on the Internet. The local setting is useful for allowing file and printer sharing, and other local networking services. When you configure ports, you can specify the port number and protocol, and then selectively turn that port setting on or off.

Note   If you intend to update your device in the future by using Device Update Agent (DUA) or another update mechanism, be sure that On (recommended) is selected, and add the appropriate ports to your Globally Open Ports list. To find the port number and protocol, consult the documentation for the program or service you want to use.

To add or change port settings

  1. Run Target Designer, and open your .slx file.

  2. In Configuration editor, click the Windows Firewall and Internet Connection Sharing component, and then click Settings.

  3. Choose On (recommended) if it is not already selected.

  4. Click the show link that is adjacent to Globally Open Ports.

  5. Type the Port Name of the service or program you want to allow to communicate through a port.

  6. Type the Port Number and Protocol of the program or service.

    To find the port number and protocol, consult the documentation for the program or service you want to use.

  7. Choose whether you want to open this port for Any source, which could include any computer on the Internet, or Local network only, which limits opening the port to computers on your local network.

  8. Select the checkbox to enable this port.
