Register websites in tracker scanning (preview)

The first step in working with Microsoft Priva Tracker Scanning (preview) is to register your organization’s websites. The person in your organization who understands how the website domain is to be scanned should be the individual who completes this task. After registering a website, you can scan it to identify trackers and detect missing consent banners and privacy notices.

Registered websites page and website details page

The Registered websites page in tracker scanning is where you register, view, and manage your organization’s websites. The page lists the websites with basic details such as the URL, owner, description, and country or region of the website’s domain registration.

Select a website name from the list to view its details page, which includes basic properties, the date registered, trackers identified through scanning, and associated tracker categories. A registered website’s details page is where you create and manage scans for the website, view the results showing which trackers were identified, and view associated consent models.

Register a website

Follow the steps below to register a website in tracker scanning:

  1. On the Registered websites page, select Register.

  2. On the Register data source (Website) flyout pane, enter a name and description.

  3. For Website URL, enter the URL of a website you want to scan.

    Important

The Website URL field is dynamic. The way the URL is entered will dictate how a scan behaves. A scan will only scan the pages that contain the exact syntax that you enter. Get more details about how to enter the website URL.

  4. For Regulatory country or region, select where the website is hosted.

  5. For Owners, enter the name or email address of the user in your organization who is the main contacts for the site.

  6. For Business domain, use the default domain when setting up websites and scans.

  7. For Collection, select the appropriate collection. Learn more about collections.

  8. Select Create.

The registered website is created and you arrive on the registered website’s details page, which is where you create and run a compliance scan. Before you run a scan, you need to create tracker categories to adequately identify and categorize trackers picked up by the scan.

Tips for entering website URL

To accommodate customer use cases, the website URL can be used to set up various scanning use cases, such as scanning specific subdomains or sections of a web domain. The simplest and most inclusive way to register a website is to enter just the top-level and secondary-level domains; for example, contoso.com. Scanning this registered website would pick up any pages that include contoso.com somewhere in its URL string, including, for example, www.contoso.com and privacy.contoso.com.

However, adding the root to the URL string, such as www.contoso.com or https://www.contoso.com will restrict the crawl to just those pages and it wouldn’t scan pages containing privacy.contoso.com or contoso.com/products.

If your organization has different websites pertaining to different parts of the organization; for example, privacy.contoso.com or support.contoso.com, you want to register those websites separately in order to run scans on them.
