  • The Guides solution is installed and configured.
  • You have a user set up with appropriate role and permission.
  • Dynamics 365 Guides PC app is installed.

Scenario

You will play the role of an author and create a guide from scratch. With the power of Mixed Reality and Guides, you will be able to quickly create a set of holographic instruction that can adapt to operator’s level of expertise.

Detailed steps

  1. Sign in to the Guides PC app. You need a user account properly configured.
  2. Select Create new guide.
  3. Name your guide and select Create. The Outline page opens.
  4. Select Set your Anchor now at the top of the page. Setting up your anchor is required to be able to open the guide on HoloLens later.
  5. Select Holographic. This anchor method is fully digital and does not require a printer.
  6. When done, select Outline in the left pane to go back to your guide structure. The default holographic anchor is configured in the Anchor step.
  7. Rename the first tasks Introduction.
  8. Create two other tasks that you will rename Beginner and Expert. We will use these new tasks later.
  9. Enter the Step editor for the first step of the Introduction task by clicking in the blue area where the Click to add step description text appears. From here, you can add text description, links, media and/or holograms to your step.
  10. Type the following text to let operators know what the guide is about. This guide will teach you how to operate our new air compressor, depending on your level of expertise
  11. Navigate to the 3D toolkit in the library.
  12. From the 3D toolkit, drag and drop the Next trigger into one of the 3D part bins, below the step card.
  13. Optional: Add a media to the step by selecting Import in the bottom right of the library. Pick a supported image or video file. When done, find it in the library and drag and drop it into the Media Panel slot below and to the left the step card.
  14. Your first step is configured.

Now add another step.

  1. Select + Add step in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Add a question step.
  3. Type the following text in the step card. What is your level of expertise?.
  4. Select the First response button.
  5. In the Property panel on the right pane, assign a Button label, as well as a Destination that matches the structure of your previously created tasks. In this case, enter Beginners as the label for the first response, and then select the first step in the Beginner task.
  6. Repeat the process for Expert. The question step is now properly configured.

Finish the configuration of our guide by adding a Completion step for each of the tasks, so that they are not open-ended.

  1. On the Outline page, select the three dots at the top-right corner for each task and select Add a completion step.
  2. Make sure your completion steps are always the last step of your task.

You are now ready to move to the HoloLens where we will learn how to place a Hologram, use branching steps and spatial triggers.
