Assessment and feedback

Completed

The educator’s role providing authentic assessment and feedback is instrumental to the intermediate student’s growth as a learner. The tools that an educator uses to assess student understanding must be formative, frequent, and inclusive. Self-assessment and reflection are another key component of students making meaning of their learning for the intermediate classroom.

Educators and learners in the hybrid classroom can use many Microsoft 365 digital tools to reach all students, allowing students to self-assess their own learning and the educator to give direct feedback.

  • Built-in accessibility tools - such as Immersive Reader included in Word, OneNote, Teams, Outlook, Edge, Minecraft, Forms, and Flipgrid - provide opportunities to communicate and access content by having their work read to them
  • Microsoft Editor, an AI-powered service, analyzes a document for spelling, grammar, refinements, originality then supplies readability stats students use to self-assess
  • Keep the feedback loop going in assignments in Teams. Assignments allows for the distribution of lessons or Form quizzes to a whole-class or selected students. They provide a space for feedback and comments directly on the files students are working on or for the overall assignment.
  • Use formative tools to collect information from students and provide necessary instruction and feedback. Forms can collect information in polls, surveys, and quizzes. Flipgrid can be used to show the learning process through video and screen recordings.
  • Many interactive and game-based tools integrate with Microsoft 365 such as PearDeck, Nearpod, and Kahoot. These tools allow learning to be either educator-led or student self-paced.
  • OneNote Class Notebook can be used to create a live portfolio or journal where educators can supply feedback. Feedback can be offered using digital ink to highlighting areas or add information for the learner right in their digital binder.
  • For more ideas, see Feedback and assessment tools for remote learning.

The intermediate learner can demonstrate their learning using different of tools. For feedback to be effective, the educator needs to provide choice, using choice boards, project-based learning, and multiple modes for students to show their understanding. Rubrics support the use and measurement of various assessment tools. Rubrics allow educators to assess targeted skills, monitor progress, and supply new or adjusted learning experiences to personalize student learning.
