Manage Microsoft 365 and AI-service licenses at scale using direct, group-based, and pay-as-you-go assignment, troubleshoot common assignment issues, and choose the right Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, or Agent 365 access model for different user populations.

Learning objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Assign and manage Microsoft 365 licenses at scale using direct, group-based, and pay-as-you-go models, including enabling and disabling the service plans within a license.
  • Verify license resolution and troubleshoot common assignment issues—including the group-based no-nested-group-cascade limitation, disabled service plans behind "missing features," and usage-location or insufficient-license errors.
  • Select and assign the appropriate AI-service license—Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Chat pay-as-you-go, Copilot Studio, or Agent 365—for a given user population's usage pattern.
  • Describe how Microsoft 365 billing is structured, including billing accounts, billing profiles, invoices, and self-service purchases.
  • Configure a pay-as-you-go billing policy that links an Azure subscription to a metered AI service for a specific group.
  • Assign the least-privileged administrator role for a given licensing or billing task.

Prerequisites

  • Experience with Microsoft 365 workloads and Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Entra groups (security groups and Microsoft 365 groups).
