There are two ways to post serial numbers or lot numbers to jobs:

  • From a purchase document, like a purchase order

  • From a job journal

Post serial and lot numbers from a purchase document

When you purchase items specifically for a job, you can post them to the job by entering the job number and job task number on the purchase lines.

To post serial numbers or lot numbers from a purchase order, follow these steps:

  1. In the Search for page field, enter purchase orders and select the related link.

  2. Select New to create a new purchase order.

  3. Select a vendor.

  4. On the Lines FastTab, enter an item that is set up for item tracking.

  5. Assign serial or lot numbers. (If you aren't familiar with this process, refer to the unit about how to assign serial and lot numbers in a purchase document in the Learn module Manage inbound serial and lot numbers in Dynamics 365 Business Central).

  6. In the Job No. and Job Task No. fields, select the job and job task to which you want to post the item with serial or lot numbers.

  7. Post the purchase order.

After posting the purchase order, you will find item tracking information on the job ledger entries.

Post serial and lot numbers from a job journal

With a job journal, you can use stock items for a job. When these stock items have serial or lot numbers, you must select which serial or lot numbers you are going to use for the job.

You can do this in two ways:

  • By entering the item tracking lines from the job journal.

  • By entering the item tracking lines from the job planning lines.

The following video demonstrates how to post serial and lot numbers from a job journal.

Besides entering job journal lines manually, you can also create them from the job planning lines. For items with serial or lot numbers, you can already enter the item tracking lines from the job planning lines and have them transferred automatically to the job journal. Let’s see how this works in the following video.
