Environmental metrics and analytics

Completed

With the environmental metrics and analytics capability, you can connect your environmental data from Microsoft Sustainability Manager to the data lake as tables without the need for reingestion. You can process this data according to your sustainability requirements, creating custom environmental notebooks and building insights to better understand your carbon, water, and waste emissions.

This capability deploys notebooks and data lakes. These items compute and store analytical datasets and metrics that are required for building insights and dashboards to help you visualize and analyze the metrics.

The environmental metrics and analytics capability includes the following features:

  • Data integration

  • Computation of analytical datasets and metrics

  • Data visualization and analysis

Environmental metrics and analytics resources

Environmental metrics and analytics include notebooks and data lakes that compute and store analytical datasets and metrics that are required for building insights and dashboards to visualize and analyze the metrics.

Lakehouses that this capability deploys are:

  • IngestedMSMData - Stores Sustainability Manager data.

  • AggregatedMSMData - Stores aggregated datasets and metrics for analysis.

All resources that this solution deploys are prebuilt and integrated into your Fabric workspace. These resources are open, allowing you to customize them according to your specific requirements. For more information, see Environmental metrics and analytics.

Data integration

You can use the Fabric shortcut functionality to link data from an Azure Data Lake Storage container that has Microsoft Sustainability Manager exported data.

Follow these steps to integrate data from an Azure Data Lake Storage container:

  1. Set up Azure Synapse Link - Set up Azure Synapse Link for the Microsoft Sustainability Manager environment to allow the extraction of data into the environmental metrics and analytics capability.

  2. Link the Data Lake Storage container - Use the Fabric shortcut functionality to link the Data Lake Storage container with Microsoft Sustainability Manager data to the IngestedMSMData lakehouse of the deployed capability.

Computation of analytical datasets and metrics

After the solution integrates Microsoft Sustainability Manager data into the IngestedMSMData lakehouse, it computes analytical datasets and custom metrics that are required for analysis. When you deploy this capability, the solution deploys the GenerateAggregatedMSMData notebook in your Fabric workspace, which you can use to generate specific environmental metrics.

When the notebook runs successfully, the solution creates the required metrics as tables in the AggregatedMSMData lakehouse.

Data visualization and analysis

After the solution computes the metrics and stores them as tables, you can use the prebuilt Power BI dashboard to analyze the metrics.
