Timing Captures can record video frames alongside other timing data. Use video frames when you need to correlate a visual state in your app with a performance problem in the capture.
When video capture is enabled, PIX adds a Video Frames lane to the Timeline view. The lane shows the frames captured over the duration of the capture, aligned with the lanes that contain the timing data, so you can see the state of your title at the point where a performance problem occurred.
Capture video frames
Enable video capture before you start the Timing Capture.
- Configure a Timing Capture for a launched or attached process.
- In the Video section of the capture options, select Select a video capture source....
- In Select Video Source, choose a source from Monitors or Windows.
- Start the Timing Capture.
PIX can capture all the content on a whole monitor or a single window that belongs to the target process. The source picker shows a preview for each available source. Selecting a source closes the dialog and enables video capture for the next capture. Select Refresh to update the list of sources, for example after your app opens a new window.
If no source is available, PIX shows No video sources found. PIX lists only sources that can provide a preview frame.
To turn video capture back off before starting the capture, use Disable video capture in the capture options.
View frames in the Timeline
Open the capture and select the Timeline layout. If the capture contains video, PIX shows the Video Frames lane. The lane appears only when the capture contains video frame data.
Use the lane to inspect captured frames:
- Hover over the Video Frames lane to preview the frame at that point in time.
- Select a frame in the lane to show it in Element Details.
- Zoom the Timeline view to inspect frames near the performance data you're investigating.
View a selected frame
When you select a frame, Element Details shows the frame in the Video Frame section. By default, PIX scales the frame to fill the view.
To view the frame at its original size in Element Details, open the Display Options panel, expand Video Frame Options, and set the toggle to None. Set it back to Fill to scale the frame to the available space.
To open the selected frame in a popup at full size, select Show full size in Element Details.
Copy or save a frame
Right-click the frame in Element Details, and then choose one of these actions:
- Copy to Clipboard copies the current frame image to the clipboard.
- Save as bmp... saves the current frame as a
.bmpfile.
