Academic Software Development in Cooperation with an Industry Partner

Hello!

I am currently working with VS Code but I am reviewing different IDEs to improve my coding experience. But I am not sure if I am allowed to use Visual Studio Community.

I work as an academic researcher at a university and my research requires writing a software tool. I am working on a project, financed by a public institute of the german state. However, this project is in cooperation with an industry partner. The project agreement states that the industry partner and the university both own the developed tool and the tool will not be open source. The industry partner will have commertial use for the tool while I and the university won't.

Am I allowed to use the Visual Studio Community version for development, as I am a non commercial developer working at a university or do I have to use the Visual Studio Professional version, as the tool will be of commercial use to one of the project partners?

Kind Regards,

Bayram

    Hello @Bayram Stucke ,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I recommend you call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Tiem) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist.

In my opinion, you need to first confirm if you are an individual developer, an organization, or an "enterprise". See this license terms: MICROSOFT VISUAL STUDIO COMMUNITY 2022. If you can confirm this, then you can check the corresponding rights.

    Best Regards,

    Tianyu
