Hello, Recently, PDFs embedded in word documents no longer open if the user has edge as the primary PDF viewer or Nitro Pro. One of our users has adobe reader and they can open the embedded PDFs. PDFs are embedded From Insert > Object. Displayed PDFs as icon in Word and then opened by double clicking the icon. Any suggestions for a fix? The solution of installing adobe reader isn't feasible as it would involve the administrator having to remotely access hundreds of systems. Thank you!

You should set PDF to open in browser, please try this method:
Alternatively, you can set browser as the default PDF viewer by right-clicking on your PDF file, selecting Properties, clicking on Change next to Opens with, selecting browser you need, and clicking OK.

The computers that are experiencing this problem do not have adobe reader. Some have the default PDF viewer as Microsoft edge, and and others have the default browser as Nitro Pro. Both cannot open embedded PDFs.
There are no problems with opening PDFs that are saved on their own - just PDFs embedded in Word documents.
Did you get any error message? Did you try to test if other types of files embedded into Word also cannot open? I suggest you try to online repair Office: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/repair-an-office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b
Hi Emi! Other types of files embedded into word work - pdf's are the only problem. I do not receive an error message when trying to open the pdf. Unfortunately I cannot run the online repair as I am not an administrator and do not have one readily available.

Is there a solution? This is still an issue. Embedded PDFs are not opening in a Word document for us, either.
No solution that I have heard of. We still experience this issue.
I can add, I have done the repair and it was not fixed. I had the latest version of office installed and it still is a problem.
I haven't any experience with Nitro, but I can confirm that when a web browser is the default PDF viewer, an embedded PDF object won't open. When you are testing with Nitro, is that app set as the default for PDFs?

You will likely have better luck if you set Adobe Reader as the default on your system. It is worth trying, at least.
We have FoxIT PDF Reader as our default. If the Word file is in Viewing mode (Read only?) it won't open. I must check it out of Sharepoint and have it in Edit mode to open the embedded PDF. Why??
