Use the strategy methodology

Before you migrate a workload to Azure, you should work through the strategy process of the Cloud Adoption Framework. The Cloud Adoption Framework Strategy methodology defines justification and expected adoption outcomes.

You need to define areas such as why you want to adopt the cloud and are there specific motivations to allow multiple stakeholders to buy into the overall strategy. You also need to work through your sovereign workloads and detail the expected outcomes, along with the drivers, success metrics, and necessary capabilities to validate your cloud adoption.

To define your sovereignty and compliance requirements and strategies, you need to answer the following questions:

  • Do you understand the sovereignty and compliance requirements needed from Azure services?
  • Do you understand the sovereignty and compliance of your systems?
  • Do you understand the sovereignty requirements for your processes?
  • Do you have a strategy for handling different types of data with different sovereignty requirements?

You need to define your strategy for data residency with both Azure and Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty. Data residency deals with the physical location where data is stored and processed. Data residency requirements are a common concern for public sector customers, who often request that Microsoft limit where different types of data are stored and processed.

You can address the security and monitoring strategy using Define a security strategy and in Cloud monitoring strategy.

After you document your strategy, move onto the plan methodology of the cloud adoption framework.
