Express configuration in Intune for Education

Applies to:

  • iOS
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11
  • Windows 11 SE

Use express configuration in the Intune for Education portal to assign settings and apps to users and devices. The launch tile for the step-by-step walkthrough is found on the front page of the Intune for Education portal. Many Windows and iOS settings in these steps are already configured. These configurations are the default values and are set as recommendations. Recommended OS-specific apps are also preselected. Change the default selections as needed for your school.

Return to express configuration anytime you want to make changes to a group's settings or apps.

Step 1: Launch express configuration

This section describes how to complete the steps in express configuration. To get the most out of express configuration, make sure you sync your school data, or the groups you created, in Microsoft Entra ID.

  1. Sign in to the Intune for Education portal.

  2. Go to Express configuration, and then select Get started.

  3. Optionally, you can go to the School Data Sync website to sync your school's records with Intune for Education. When you're done, or to skip, select Continue to set up Intune for Education.

Step 2: Choose a group to configure

In this step, select the group you want to configure. Then Select Next.

Some groups are created and included with your Intune for Education subscription. Intune for Education populates these groups with the information from school records. These groups are:

  • All devices
  • All users

If you used School Data Sync (SDS) to import your school's records, these groups are also included:

  • All teachers
  • All students

Intune for Education recommends that you select the All Users group to start with. Use this group to assign the settings that all users must have. For example, password requirements and pop-up restrictions are likely the same for all users.

Remember, when you configure a top-level group, its subgroups inherit all of its settings.

Step 3: Choose apps

  1. Select one or more apps to assign. You can add the following app types to devices:

    • Web apps (for iOS and Windows)

    • Windows apps

    • iOS apps

  2. For each app you select, choose the Assignment type. Your options:

    • Available

    • Required

When you're ready to apply the assignments, select Next. The selected apps are immediately assigned to the group. Intune for Education also shows the most popular Microsoft Store apps for employees and students.

Step 4: Choose settings

Tip

If iOS configurations are unavailable when you launch express configuration, you need to upload or renew your Apple MDM Push Certificate, and add an enrollment program token. For more information and steps, see Add an MDM push certificate.

Express configuration shows you common settings for devices and users. Settings are separated into OS-specific categories: Windows settings and iOS settings.

The default settings are preset with recommended values. Select Next without making any changes to stick with the recommendations, or adjust the settings to align with your organization's needs. Settings are immediately applied to your group.

Change express configuration selections at any time to fit your school's changing policies. For more customization in Intune for Education, view the full list of Windows and iOS device settings.

Step 5: Review settings

  1. Review your apps and settings selections. Select Back to make changes.

  2. When your review is complete, select Save.
