Complete your tenant configuration in Microsoft 365

Completed

An organization's Microsoft 365 Administrator should create a checklist of the tasks needed to complete the company's tenant configuration. This checklist should guide the administrator's configuration efforts to ensure the organization performs all necessary tasks.

Checklists tend to be unique to an organization given its deployment requirements. However, most checklists include the following common tasks:

  • Move all users over to Microsoft 365.
  • Verify all users have a functional mailbox and migrate their data to their account.
  • Create all required system resources.
  • Establish and assign all permissions.
  • Move the vanity domain(s).
  • Enroll all Windows 10 and 11 devices to Intune.
  • Establish co-management with Intune if the company has Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager.
  • Establish proper governance policies for mobile devices.
  • Update and publish DNS records globally.
  • Configure the connector if Microsoft Entra Connect Sync is in place.
  • Configure multifactor authentication when an organization employs it.
  • Protect inbound and outbound mail flow with mailing policies.
  • Configure the Organizational profile with the correct information.

These tasks help organizations determine if the basic setup is complete and configured correctly. When an organization feels that its environment is ready to go-live, it can use tools such as the Microsoft Remote Connectivity Analyzer and the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SARA) to confirm its readiness. These tools check DNS records and mail flow to test whether mailing policies are working properly. They also test local connectivity from Outlook and other Office apps.

The Microsoft Remote Connectivity Analyzer and Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SARA) tools are examined in greater detail in the module titled Configure client connectivity to Microsoft 365.
