Business value

Integration with Azure Data Lake empowers customers with complete control over imaging data, enhancing flexibility in accessing and working with that data using the Azure Storage ecosystem and APIs. Furthermore, Data Lake Storage also serves as a connection point to various services, including Microsoft Fabric, unlocking fresh opportunities for analytics and AI with medical imaging data.

Feature details

The current architecture of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) service automatically provisions an Azure Storage account in the background to store uploaded DICOM data. This storage account is only accessible via the DICOM web APIs, and its security and lifecycle are solely managed by the DICOM service.

In the new architecture, users have the flexibility to specify their own fully managed Azure Data Lake Storage account. This user-managed storage account will be utilized by the DICOM service to store DICOM data received via the DICOM web APIs. Similar to other services or applications accessing data in a storage account, the DICOM service will be granted access to this data. Users can revoke this access at any time without impacting their ability to access data.

Using Azure Data Lake Storage with the DICOM service offers several benefits to users:

  • Enables direct access to DICOM data stored by the DICOM service using Azure Storage APIs, alongside DICOM web APIs, providing increased flexibility for data access and usage.
  • Introduces DICOM data to the broader ecosystem of tools designed for working with Azure Storage, including AzCopy, Azure Storage Explorer, and the Azure Storage Data Movement library.
  • Unlocks new possibilities for analytics and AI/machine learning scenarios by seamlessly integrating with Azure Data Lake Storage. This includes compatibility with services such as Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, Azure Machine Learning, and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Provides users with controls to manage storage permissions, access controls, tiers, and rules.
