It's been a hectic week.
Between getting thrown in a fountain (that's my boss, Group Program Manager of IE, but almost everyone went in at some point), and being filmed for Channel 9 video (say hi to Arvind, Will and Cindy, about half of the RSS test team), I forgot to post a note here. But, I figured that most people had probably heard that IE7 for XP (including the Windows RSS Platform) shipped last Wednesday.
But, in case you haven't... Dean Hachamovitch (GM of IE) has a post over on the IEBlog that covers all of the goodness that's in IE7. There's some good information on how to give feedback and get support, and the plans for Automatic Update distribution of IE7.
Now that the week is over, I'm taking a minute to reflect. Building IE7's RSS features and the Windows RSS Platform have been a great ride all of us on the RSS team. More importantly, it is abundantly clear that we could not have done it without the feedback and comments from all of you (anyone remember the icon posts?).
So, on behalf of the whole team: thank you.
As Dean said in his post, we have already started work on plans for the next version of Internet Explorer (which includes, of course, plans for the next version of the IE RSS features and the Windows RSS platform). So, feel free to use the comments on this post to let us know what RSS features are on the top of your must-see list for the next release.

A feature I would like to see in the RSS API is the ability to detect whether a page has RSS feeds or not. As per my current understanding, one would have to add extra non-API code to search for feeds on a page, and then add them via the RSS API. Thanks, IcebergAnonymous

My main issue at the moment is the lack of any methods for querying the feed list. I'd like to be able to search item names and descriptions, and to specify a sort order when iterating through items. Sean, Congratulations to you and the whole team on the release. Few other pieces of software have been so anticipated or so closely scrutinized. From the looks of it, you guys have done a terrific job. That being said, there's always room for improvement, right? Please add support for Basic HTTP Auth to your list of enhancement requests. (In my casual testing, this is already there, but I'll take your word for it that it's not, or if it is, it's not supposed to be. :) Thanks, CharlieAnonymous

Hey, congrats for all the effort put on this, it really will encorage non-savvy people to manage their subscriptions through Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP for simple newsfeeds instead of installing (yet) another RSS Reader. A thing I wonder though is, I was trying to use it to download my Podcasts so while I'm away they are already there, waiting to be sync'ed to my SmartPhone... but I found that many of them do not download and IE7 shows "(Download error - File size exceeds download limit)", any comments on how to change this size limit? Usually the MP3 enclosures of the Podcasts I'm subscribed to are about 60 MB, with this limitation I usually have to download them manually, being this method my preferred instead of having iTunes installed again.Anonymous

Suggestion 1: A hotkey to "View next unread feed" Suggestion 2: A hotkey to "Refresh all feeds" (Anything involing F5 would be natural) Suggestion 3: A feature, perhaps in the form of an icon that aggregated all unread feeds on one page. (marking them read) Usage: One gets to work/home presses the magic button to see all new times, perhaps reading then all at once, perhaps reading a few posts at a time while doing other work. Each Folder could generate it's own section heading, and each feed would of course have a heading too. Bonus points: having the ability to close the browser and reopen it and view the page again, perhaps an 'View archive on X Month YYY'. (Yes I'm stealing this last one from a favourate tool)Anonymous

At least I found where I can set the File Size Limit for the Enclosures found on a Feed, searched on the MSDN Library, got this http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms686401.aspx#FDE_DOWNLOAD_SIZE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED The XML source of the feed exceeds the maximum allowed size. The default size limit is 15 megabytes (MB), if the following user-defined registry value is not set: +HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER >+SOFTWARE >>+Microsoft >>>+Feeds >>>> MaxFeedSize (REG_DWORD) I set it to 128MB (0x08000000, 134217728), I do not download vodcasts so that should be enough. Said there was an error at this time and would try again later. Remove the reference and it's ok. Are there more specific instructions? And I'd like a larger limit as well for feeds like DL.tv. I misread this the first time and thought we were discussing the size of the rss auto download. The XML source larger than 15MB? Why would the source be too large? I have the same problem on quite a few podcast feeds. The registry setting stops RRS feeds working at all as others have said. This must be a bug? Its a pity becouse the RSS feature is so close to workingAnonymous

Just to report that I have the same issue. Getting "Download error - File size exceeds download limit" but changing registry as described stops RSS feed working all together.Anonymous

I'm having the same problem with the file size. It's funny, I finally downloaded IE7 thinking I could skip iTunes. Guess I was wrong.
