Refresh Your Team Foundation Client

Some information may not update automatically when changes occur in Team Foundation Server, so you should refresh the team project data cache to guarantee that you are working with current data. For example, you should refresh your client application under the following circumstances:

  • Work item type definitions are added, removed, renamed or updated.

  • Area or Iteration path nodes are added, removed, renamed or updated.

  • Users are added to or removed from security groups or permissions are updated.

  • A team member adds a new team query, document, or report.

  • A team member changes the organization or names of team queries.

  • A team project is deleted.

  • You plan to move or delete shared items, such as a team query, document, or report. To avoid potential errors, you should refresh the area to be modified to ensure that it is up to date.

Required Permissions

To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the Team Foundation Valid Users security group. If the necessary security permissions are set explicitly, you must have your View server-level information permission set to Allow and your View project-level information permission on all open team projects set to Allow. Refreshing Team Web Access or Work Item Web Access

To refresh Team Access or Work Item Web Access

  • In Team Web Access or Work Item Web Access, in the upper-right corner of the page, click Settings, and then click Refresh Cache.

    The client interface refreshes, and you can continue to work.

Refreshing Team Explorer

Nodes in Team Explorer do not update automatically when changes occur in Team Foundation Server. You should update nodes periodically to avoid potential errors. For example, if you are about to move or delete files in the Documents node, you should refresh the Documents node to be sure that the node is up to date. Otherwise you could attempt to delete or move a file that has already been deleted. which would return an error message.

Team Explorer supports three levels of refresh. You can refresh an individual plug-in node, an individual team project, or all team projects in Team Explorer.

To refresh a node, team project, or all team projects in Team Explorer

  • In Team Explorer, perform one of the following tasks:

    • To refresh a node, right-click the plug-in node that you want to update, and then click Refresh.

      For example, if you are working in a team project created by the process template Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) for Agile Software Development, you can click the Work Items, Documents, Reports, Builds, or Source Control node.

      Note

      The nodes for Reports, Builds, or Source Control only appear if they have been configured when the team project was created.

    • To refresh a team project, right-click the team project that you want to update, and then click Refresh.

    • To refresh all team projects, expand the top-level node of each team project that you want to update, and right-click the server name root node, and then click Refresh.

      Note

      If you do not expand a team project, it will not refresh.
