MSBuild targets

Targets group tasks together in a particular order and allow the build process to be factored into smaller units. For example, one target may delete all files in the output directory to prepare for the build, while another compiles the inputs for the project and places them in the empty directory. For more information on tasks, see Tasks.

Declare targets in the project file

Targets are declared in a project file with the Target element. For example, the following XML creates a target named Construct, which then calls the Csc task with the Compile item type.

<Target Name="Construct">
    <Csc Sources="@(Compile)" />
</Target>

Like MSBuild properties, targets can be redefined. For example,

<Target Name="MyTarget">
    <Message Text="First occurrence" />
</Target>
<Target Name="MyTarget">
    <Message Text="Second occurrence" />
</Target>

If MyTarget executes, it displays only "Second occurrence", because the second definition of MyTarget hides the first.

MSBuild is import-order dependent, and the last definition of a target is the definition used. If you try to redefine a target, it won't take effect if the built-in target is defined later.

Target build order

Targets must be ordered if the input to one target depends on the output of another target.

There are several ways to specify the order in which targets run.

  • Initial targets

  • Default targets

  • First target

  • Target dependencies

  • BeforeTargets and AfterTargets

A target never runs twice during a single build, even if a subsequent target in the build depends on it. Once a target runs, its contribution to the build is complete.

For details and more information about the target build order, see Target build order.

SDK-style projects

Many newer projects use an SDK, meaning they use the Sdk attribute on the root Project element; for example,<Project Sdk="Microsoft.NET.Sdk">. See Reference a Project SDK. In that case, the order of definition of some targets is not necessarily obvious, since the imports for the targets are implicitly added after the end of your project file. In older versions of MSBuild, or in projects that don't use the Sdk attribute, it was a common practice to extend the behavior of a target like Build by overriding the target AfterBuild or BeforeBuild. However, that doesn't work in projects that use an SDK, because AfterBuild is defined in an implicit import after all other code in your project file. Therefore, to extend the behavior of an existing target, create new target and specify BeforeTargets (or AfterTargets as appropriate) as follows:

<Target Name="MessageBeforePublish" BeforeTargets="BeforePublish">
  <Message Text="BeforePublish" Importance="high" />
</Target>

Give your target a descriptive name, as you would name a function in code.

In some cases, such as when working with older build scripts that use AfterBuild, you can avoid using the Sdk attribute and instead change to explicit imports. To convert an SDK-style project to use explicit imports, remove the Sdk="{SdkName}" attribute, and add two imports as follows: <import Project="{SdkName}.props"> near the beginning of the project file, and <import Project="{Sdkname}.targets"> near the end. Once you make that change, you can redefine AfterBuild after the import element that imports the {Sdkname}.targets file.

Target batching

A target element may have an Outputs attribute which specifies metadata in the form %(<Metadata>). If so, MSBuild runs the target once for each unique metadata value, grouping or "batching" the items that have that metadata value. For example,

<ItemGroup>
    <Reference Include="System.Core">
      <RequiredTargetFramework>3.5</RequiredTargetFramework>
    </Reference>
    <Reference Include="System.Xml.Linq">
      <RequiredTargetFramework>3.5</RequiredTargetFramework>
    </Reference>
    <Reference Include="Microsoft.CSharp">
      <RequiredTargetFramework>4.0</RequiredTargetFramework>
    </Reference>
</ItemGroup>
<Target Name="AfterBuild"
    Outputs="%(Reference.RequiredTargetFramework)">
    <Message Text="Reference:
      @(Reference->'%(RequiredTargetFramework)')" />
</Target>

batches the Reference items by their RequiredTargetFramework metadata. The output of the target looks like this:

Reference: 3.5;3.5
Reference: 4.0

Target batching is seldom used in real builds. Task batching is more common. For more information, see Batching.

Incremental builds

Incremental builds are builds that are optimized so that targets with output files that are up-to-date with respect to their corresponding input files are not executed. A target element can have both Inputs and Outputs attributes, indicating what items the target expects as input, and what items it produces as output.

If all output items are up-to-date, MSBuild skips the target, which significantly improves the build speed. This is called an incremental build of the target. If only some files are up-to-date, MSBuild executes the target without the up-to-date items. This is called a partial incremental build of the target. For more information, see Incremental builds.

SDK and default build targets

Some build targets depend on the SDK you're referencing, if any. To get all targets available for a project file, use the -targets or -ts command-line option. See MSBuild command line reference. The build system contains a large number of targets that are for internal use by the build, which are usually indicated with an underscore (_) at the beginning of the target name. To get a list of the public targets only, try piping the output to something that filters out the underscores. For example, in bash when working with dotnet build, you can do the following:

dotnet build -targets path/to/project.csproj | grep -v '_'

In PowerShell, you can filter with:

 dotnet build -targets path\to\project.csproj | select-string -pattern '_' -NotMatch

If you're not using .NET, use MSBuild.exe -ts in place of dotnet build -ts, followed by the same piping and filtering operations.

For a list of .NET SDK targets, see, for example, Microsoft.NET.Publish.targets. You can find this file in the .NET SDK installation folders. Other SDKs have similar .targets files in their installation folders that you can browse.

Some targets, the default targets, are part of the .NET build system and are referenced whether or not you specify an SDK. C++ projects have their own set of default targets. See MSBuild internals for C++ projects.

immediate children and not children of children. The reason this happens is that
the ProjectReferenceWithConfiguration list that is consumed by _SplitProjectReferencesByFileExistence
is only populated in the current project and is empty in the children. The empty list
causes _MSBuildProjectReferenceExistent to be empty and terminates the recursion.

IncrementalClean
Remove files that were produced in a prior build but weren't produced in the current build.
The reason is that if, for example, the name of the .exe has changed we want to delete the
old copy.

Leave the Clean cache file containing only the files produced in the current build.

PostBuildEvent
Run the post-build event. This step is driven by two parameters:

(1) The $(RunPostBuildEvent) property is set by the user through the IDE and can be one of four values.

        - OnBuildSuccess: In this case, every step of the build must succeed for the post-build step to run.
        - <Blank>: This is the same as OnBuildSuccess.
        - OnOutputUpdated: In this case, the post-build step will run only if the main output assembly was
        actually updated.
        - Always: The post-build step is always run.

(2) The $(_AssemblyTimestampBeforeCompile) and $(_AssemblyTimestampAfterCompile) values are
        set by the _TimeStampBeforeCompile and _TimeStampAfterCompile targets. If the assembly was actually
        rebuilt during this build, then the two values will be different.

AllProjectOutputGroups
The targets below drive output groups, which provide generic information about a
project's inputs (e.g., content files, compilation sources, etc.) and built outputs
(e.g., built EXE/DLL, PDB, XML documentation files, etc.)

Each target may produce two kinds of items: outputs and dependencies. Outputs are
items from the current project; dependencies are items that are brought into the
current project as a result of referencing other projects or components.

For both outputs and dependencies, the Include attribute
specifies the location of the output/dependency; it must be a full path. Any number
of additional attributes may be placed on an output/dependency item.
