L'interfaccia è l'interfaccia IDictionary di base per le raccolte nongeneriche di coppie chiave/valore. Per la versione generica di questa interfaccia, vedere System.Collections.Generic.IDictionary<TKey,TValue>.

Ogni elemento è una coppia chiave/valore archiviata in un DictionaryEntry oggetto.

Ogni coppia deve avere una chiave univoca. Le implementazioni possono variare in base al fatto che consentano la chiave di essere Null. Il valore può essere null e non deve essere univoco. L'interfaccia consente l'enumerazione IDictionary delle chiavi e dei valori contenuti, ma non implica alcun ordine di ordinamento specifico.

IDictionary le implementazioni rientrano in tre categorie: sola lettura, dimensione fissa, dimensione variabile. Impossibile modificare un oggetto di sola IDictionary lettura. Un oggetto a dimensione IDictionary fissa non consente l'aggiunta o la rimozione di elementi, ma consente la modifica degli elementi esistenti. Un oggetto a dimensione IDictionary variabile consente l'aggiunta, la rimozione e la modifica degli elementi.

L'istruzione foreach del linguaggio C# (For Each in Visual Basic) restituisce un oggetto del tipo degli elementi nell'insieme.
