Sharepoint Excel files won't open and show "processing... press ESC to cancel"

Hi,

I reinstalled Office in 64-bits and now I'm having big issues when opening Excel files from the Sharepoint server. Each time I open a file it says "Processing, press esc to cancel" and if I don't immediately press esc it will then become frozen and it won't open at all. I can wait as long as I want but it won't work.

I've tried re-installing office (with the Microsoft support and recovery assistent tool) and online repair with out any positive result. I've had this issue a few months ago and then in the end I decided to completely re-install Windows because it seemed the only solution. Sadly, now I've got it again.

I've had a few add-ins installed that might have caused the issues, but the problem is still there when I uninstalled them. Also, it worked fine before with the add-ins there.

Note: I don't have the problem when opening files that were saved locally.

    Dear OkkoM,

I am Renzo, as an Independent Advisor and Office user, I'll help you with your question.

You could try with following process:

    1. If you have installed OneDrive client > right-click over white cloud close to Windows time in sys-tray bar > click in Settings > Office tab > then untick the feature "Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open" and save changes, and try with Excel files again.

    Hi Renzo,

Thanks for the quick and useful reply. This seems to do the trick! However, does this mean that I now lose a functionality? That's not ideal of course, but probably not too bad for me. Can I still work together with colleagues on the same files in the Desktop app?

    Thanks!
