Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Available March 8th for MSDN Subscribers, general availability March 10th

Great news!

Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 will be available tomorrow for download for MSDN Subscribers, and will be generally available for download on March 10th, 2011.

While the Service Pack is mostly focused on improvements in response to feedback on Visual Studio 2010, one new feature I want to highlight is the integration of IIS Express into Visual Studio 2010. IIS Express, which was introduced with the new Microsoft WebMatrix editor, is a lightweight, yet full-featured version of IIS that can run without administrative permissions, allowing you to develop and test full-fidelity sites in scenarios where the full IIS 7.x would be impossible, such as where policy prevents installation of IIS, or on Windows XP.

This is a BIG win for developers, since it means that no longer do you have to wonder whether your site will continue to work once deployed, whether you’re using SSL, or HTTP compression, the features you rely on will be there for you in IIS Express.

    When is VS2010 going to be backwards compatible with VS2008.  We have many applications written in VS2008 that we don't want to re-write for VS2010.  We also want both of these applications to live on the same server.

    Tracey, I'm not sure that there's anything publicly announced in terms of backwards compat, but that is a frequent request we get from customers, so I'm sure the VS team is eager to accomodate such scenarios.

    Do I need to talk to someone about this request or will you request from the VS team?  If I need to make the request, can you point me in the right direction?

    Tracey, No need. I know the team is aware of the desire. And actually, they just announced that the next version of Visual Studio will be project-compatible with VS2010, per Doug Seven's note here: twitter.com Can't make any promises for the team on VS08/VS2010, but I'm sure they're aware that it's on our customers' wish lists.
