Migrating Clusters That Are Running Previous Versions of Exchange

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 will reach end of support on April 11, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Applies to: Exchange Server 2007, Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Server 2007 SP2, Exchange Server 2007 SP3

To migrate Mailbox servers from Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange 2000 Server, you must move mailboxes by using the Move Mailbox Wizard or the Move-Mailbox cmdlet in the Exchange Management Shell.

If the storage solution used by Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange 2000 Server can be migrated to the cluster continuous replication (CCR) solution, it can be used as part of the CCR solution. One possible sequence of steps could be:

  • Install a new node with new storage as the first node of the cluster.

  • Use the Move-Mailbox cmdlet to migrate all users from the old system and storage onto the new cluster. At this point, the CCR solution is a single node in a cluster.

  • As storage is made available from the old system, redirect the storage to the second node of the CCR pair. It becomes the storage hosting the second copy.

When all mailboxes are off the original server, decommission the server and, if possible, simplify any storage to server association. The original storage is not completely dedicated to the second node of the CCR pair.
