Windows SharePoint Services Extensions
SharePoint Products and Technologies is a prerequisite for the Team Foundation application tier. You can either install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 when you install Visual Studio Team System Team Foundation Server or specify a server that already has SharePoint Products and Technologies installed and running when you deploy Team Foundation Server. You can specify an existing installation of Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. However, if the physical server that you specify is not running the application tier for Team Foundation, you must install these extensions on the server that is running SharePoint Products and Technologies before Team Foundation Server will function correctly.
What Are Windows SharePoint Services Extensions?
Windows SharePoint Services extensions include site templates that the process templates for Team Foundation Server references when team projects are created. The extensions also enable team project portals to appear and function correctly. For example, the extensions set up the redirection for SQL Server Reporting Services so that team project reports can appear on the portals. Without these extensions, project portals will not appear correctly, and you might not be able to create projects.
Installing Windows SharePoint Services Extensions
Depending on your deployment configuration, you might need to install Windows SharePoint Services extensions as part of installing and configuring Team Foundation Server. You must install these extensions if either of the following conditions is true:
You specify a deployment of SharePoint Products and Technologies that is already installed and configured, and you do not want to install the Team Foundation application tier on the same server.
You install SharePoint Products and Technologies on a different server from Team Foundation Server.
You do not need to install Windows SharePoint Services extensions if either of the following conditions is true:
You install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 when you install Team Foundation Server.
You install Team Foundation Server on the same server that is already running SharePoint Products and Technologies.
You can install Windows SharePoint Services extensions by inserting the installation media for Team Foundation Server and clicking the appropriate option on the main page of the installation wizard. For more information about how to install Windows SharePoint Services extensions, see the topic "How to: Install Team Foundation Server Components for Windows SharePoint Services" in the Team Foundation Installation Guide.
