Microsoft Game Development Kit samples

Samples are available that demonstrate the popular features of the Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK).

If there are samples you'd like but they aren't available here, share your thoughts with us on the Xbox Developer forums in the Feedback space. To create your message, select the Give us feedback button.

Because this feedback space is shared with other areas of development, please specify that your request is for samples. It would help if you're clear and specific in describing the samples you'd like. Sample requests with the most upvotes will be prioritized.

Download instructions

Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK) samples (both console and desktop (Windows PC) samples) are packaged as a single .zip file and can be downloaded from the Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK) Software Download site. Unity samples are in a separate .zip file that can be downloaded from the same site.

  1. In the dropdown box under Select File type, select GDK and click Confirm.
  2. After the page refreshes, in the dropdown box under Select build/version number, select Microsoft <month year> GDKX (Samples only) compatible with all GDK versions [(Revision x)], where <month year> corresponds to the desired Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK) release, and the highest revision number indicates the latest update.
  3. For Unity samples, select Microsoft <month year> GDKX Unity Samples.

An example of the samples file name is: Microsoft March 2023 GDKX (Samples only) compatible with all GDK versions (Revision 2).

Alternatively, a large majority of the samples are publically available on the GDK Samples GitHub page.

If you're using the Xbox One Software Development Kit, go to Xbox Developer Downloads. For more information, see XDK samples.
