Overview of FHIR data ingestion in healthcare data solutions (preview)

[This article is prerelease documentation and is subject to change.]

The FHIR data ingestion pipeline in healthcare data solutions (preview) enables you to import your Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) data sourced from a FHIR service directly into your data lake in its raw JSON format. You can utilize the FHIR export service and Microsoft Fabric OneLake to efficiently integrate FHIR data from services such as Azure Health Data Services. The capability allows you to store the data in the data lake as newline delimited JSON (NDJSON) files. This streamlined process ensures the integrity and accessibility of your healthcare data within the Fabric environment, facilitating easy retrieval and analysis. If you don't have a FHIR server in your test environment, you can use the provided sample data instead.

Healthcare data solutions (preview) support the full set of FHIR R4 resources as outlined in the HL7 FHIR R4 US Core specifications. Hence, bringing your FHIR data to the lake enables you to unlock a wealth of analytical capabilities for the rich clinical data, financial (claims and explanation of benefits) data, and administration data. The solution and the comprehensive dataset also empower you to develop various analytical scenarios such as:

  • Quality reporting
  • Population health management
  • Clinical research studies
  • Operational reporting
  • Decision support

Note

The FHIR data ingestion capability is required to run other healthcare data solutions (preview) capabilities if you're using your own FHIR data. The capability also has a direct dependency on the Healthcare data foundations capability. Before you deploy FHIR data ingestion, ensure that you successfully deploy Healthcare data foundations.
