Choose the Configuration Item Type to Create for Desired Configuration Management

When you create a configuration item in Configuration Manager 2007, you need to decide which configuration item type you need.

Choose an application configuration item type if any of the following apply:

  • You want to check for the presence of an application.

  • You want to use the configuration item with either of these configuration baseline rules:

    • If these optional application configuration items are detected, they must be properly configured.

    • These application configuration items must not be present.

Choose an operating system configuration item type if the following applies:

  • You want the settings and objects in the configuration item to apply to only specified versions of the operating system.

Choose a general configuration item if any of the following apply:

  • You do not need to check for the presence of an application.

  • You do not want to use the configuration item with either of these configuration baseline rules:

    • If these optional application configuration items are detected, they must be properly configured.

    • These application configuration items must not be present.

  • You do not need the settings and objects in the configuration item to apply to only specified versions of the operating system.
