האם משתמשים אוהבים לראות הודעות בשפות שאינם אנגלית?

אני בדעה שלא כדאי להציג כברירת מחדל הודעות שאינם באנגלית בדף הבית.

הודעה זו מעניינת אולי 1% מהקוראים ושמשמשת כ"רעש" לשאר האוכלוסייה.

 אם כל ההודעות באתר זה היו מתחלקות שווה בשווה בין אנגלית, עברית, רוסית, סינית וצרפתית אז לפי חשבון פשוט רק כ-20% מההודעות יהיו מובנות לכל אחד מהקוראים - למעט אנשים שיודעים את כל השפות הנ"ל.

אתם באמת רוצים להשתמש באתר (או ב-FEED) שמבינים רק כל הודעה חמישית?

And for the non-hebrew-readers:

1. Was this post (in hebrew) helpful to you?
2. Does it bother you to recieve non-english posts on the main page?
3. If 3 out of every 10 posts were in a language which you don't understand, would that bother you? How about 5 in 10? 9 in 10?
4. Any suggestions on how to best handle multi-lingual posts on the main page and/or aggregate feed?

   3) yes. The main feed is there for the large scale audience, i.e. the world. Every individual blogger can set a flag if a blog entry has to appear on the main feed. It is not interesting for the world if a particular posting is in a language only a fraction of the audience can read.
   4) Don't put non-english postings on the main feed.
   
   About the mainfeed not being practical: that's nonsense. The mainfeed has 2 different aggregated rss feeds, which are very useful in every rss reader. Having non-english postings in these feeds is making this generic feed less useful however.
   
   People should understand that what they post on the main feed is read by many. If you want to tell a lot of people something, you have to make sure they understand you. If that is not your goal, don't post on the mainfeed, it's a single checkbox.

  Why can't Text know the language of a post, and respect the user's browser preferences about language (ie only display posts in languages the user has chosen to accept)?
  It seems like the ideal solution. Hebrew isn't the only language that causes this problem. And I imagine these blogs are next to useless to those who don't speak English (Who would wade through dozens of English posts to find the very occasional one in their native language?)

  This post wasn't useful to me, I don't understand that much hebrew, but then again, most of this posts are useless. I just read them for fun. And I really like it when I find a post in a non-english language I can understand (french, spanish, german, italian, russian, hebrew, etc). I wouldn't say "take it from the main feed". I don't see why english should be the only language here, this is clearly not an all-american site. I could argue that you should take local news from the main feed, and you see them all the time. It would be nice if there was some filtering system, though... but I don't know if that's technically feasible right now. Anyway, it's 1 blog in 20, so I don't see how it could bother english monolingual people to have them...

  1) Not really.
  2) Nope. It's pretty easy to ignore stuff I can't read.
  3 and 4) Once it gets much past 2-3/10, I think it'd be worthwhile to have a way to set a preference to filter out content I can't understand and have the website retain that preference.

   I hate to hate on non-english languages, but let's be honest, maybe .1% of the readers of the main feed could understand this post. and that's a very liberal estimate. and I think it is safe to sayt that anyone getting the main feed can already read anything in english as it stands, so even the hebrew post is probably not useful to them.

  Frans: I stand corrected regarding the feed - I could have sworn it was the same cropped content, like on the main page.
  
  I still stand by what I said about signal vs noise though - I personally find it's more efficient to find decent blogs by following links; letting bloggers I find interesting filter content for me.

  I don't mind seeing the odd post in another language. But I could not help wondering what you were saying, could I suggest adding an English translation below the Hebrew?
