Windows 7 1394 Firewire devices not working?

The 1394 FireWire driver was updated in the Windows 7 and some older 1394 devices may not be compatible with the new driver. The old driver is still available as highlighted here. This solved my initial problems with a Maxtor III OneTouch drive. See this site for details https://www.microsoft.com/whdc/connect/1394_Windows7.mspx

    Hey Chris, I was wondering how you got to that screen that lets you select Legacy ("Select the device driver," etc) .  I can't connect my camcorders to my new computer running Windows 7 64 bit.  I suspect because they're too "slow" for the new 1394.     AJ, There are probably a number of ways to navigate to the window shown here. This is what I did: 1- Start menu 2- Right click "Computer" select "manage" 3- Select "Device manager" from the left hand pane 4- Expand the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" node in the device tree on the right hand pane 5- Right click the host controller node select "Update driver software ..." 6- select "Browse my computer for driver software" 7- select "let me pick from a list of device driver on my computer ..." and you should see the window shown in this post.     Thanks so much Chris!  The problem (and spread this around if you hear of similar problems!) was that I didn't set either of my cameras to the 1394 transfer mode.  It was an internal camera problem after all!! Your posts are really helpful, I'm definitley going to follow it now! AJ

    Thank you very much. This solved my problem with an old iomega (Win 7 x64). The size of it doesn't warrant the time I spent troubleshooting the darn thing (and it has USB, which worked fine), but I just hate unresolved issues. Well, thanks to you there are no more of these.

    This didnt solve my issue(Win 7 x64), I have two WD My books and neither of them work using firewire.  Any other solutions?

    Chris (re your query 11 Nov 09) Unfortunately I don't have any further info. I am not a specialist in this area.     I have tried this method, it do detect my DV (when view from Device Manager). However all my programs use (including Power Director, Sony Vegas) still can't capture video.

    I do able to change to the legacy driver successful.  After change to legacy driver, win 7 success to detect my Panasonic DV.  Everything seems fine.   But unfortunately, it still can't to get my software (I try Power Director & Sony Vegas) to detect the DV I'm having.

    Yesterday try hard with the setting for one whole night again without any success.  Finally I use back my old PC with XP. The only trouble some is I have to copy the files from one PC to another PC by thumb drive. Now try to do dual boot......
