Available Today: FreeBSD Support for Windows Server Hyper-V

Today, Microsoft and partners NetApp and Citrix are excited to announce the availability of FreeBSD support for Windows Server Hyper-V.  This collaboration, announced at BSDCAN 2012, will help more customers adopt virtualization and move toward cloud computing.  Microsoft is committed to supporting multiple platforms with its server virtualization solution so that more organizations can take advantage of server consolidation cost-savings and build foundations for private, public and hybrid cloud computing.  

It was invaluable to partner with NetApp and Citrix, who both have impressive expertise in how to enable FreeBSD to run on Hyper-V with high performance.  This release includes 8,500 lines of code submitted under the BSD license, supporting FreeBSD 8.2 on Windows Server 2008 R2.  We will continue to work with the community to support other releases of FreeBSD as well.  Analysis is currently underway to assess customer demand and partner capacity to extend support to FreeBSD 9.0 on Windows Server 2012.

The source code can be found on Github here, as well as instructions for building from source and running the drivers can be found here.  On behalf of the FreeBSD on Hyper-V team, we welcome your feedback through the mailing list to continue improving the code for future submission to the FreeBSD core.

    TS: Thanks for your questions. Regarding timing and version details for preinstalled drivers, we’re in active discussions with various stakeholders and are also looking for community feedback, so your thoughts are much appreciated. Regarding your second comment, we are currently in the process of doing exactly what you are suggesting. In addition, the Linux hyper-V drivers (and the support for various distributions) are officially released, and you can provide feedback here social.technet.microsoft.com/.../threads

    Chris: Currently we do not enable the VSS integration service in the driver, but this is something we are looking at in the future. We appreciate the feedback – thank you.

    Please extend support of FreeBSD 8.3 and FreeBSD 9.1(currently beta, but production release probably be the same time as Windows Server 2012) on Hyper-V 2012.  Also Ubuntu 12.04.1LTS should also be properly supported. Thanks

    One more thing:  it is probably better to build Hyper-V 2012 support right into FreeBSD 9.x kernel so that users can just install it and boom, it just works.  Much like how Ubuntu 12.04LTS includes Hyper-V intergration in its releases. Please work with the FreeBSD developers who are busy pushing out FreeBSD 9.1 right now, and see if you can push your code into FreeBSD 9.1 production release.  That would be awesome if Hyper-V 2012, Ubuntu 12.04.1LTS and FreeBSD 9.1 all arrive together and work together without manual intervention.
